  • Salt Pork vs. Bacon?

    Last night while cruising the pork section of my meat counter, I saw what looked like a slab of unsliced bacon labeled salt pork. I was thinking it would be good to throw in the crock pot with some other leaner cut of meat, but wasn't sure *exactly* what to do with it, so I didn't buy it. :P

    Does it taste like bacon since it kind of looks like it? Do you even mess with the stuff??

    It's salt cured bacon. It's good as a base in stocks and soups (or thrown in with some collard / mustard greens) but really too salty to eat alone IMHO.

        it's unsmoked... tastes nothing like bacon... it's really not palatable on it's own, throw it in as a flavoring with something else.

          Salt pork is SALTY.

          When living in Indiana, I couldn't find side pork anywhere, but I did find salt pork. I had to soak it and soak it to get the saltiness down, but it did work. On the up side, I didn't have to season it.
