  • Fried Cabbage, comfort food for winter

    Just found this recipe at allrecipes. com and it helped me out with the old "what am I going to do with all this cabbage I harvested??" Awesome comfort food now that winter's approaching and primal approved for sure.

    Fried Cabbage with Bacon, onion & garlic

    6-10 slices bacon chopped
    1 large onion diced
    2 cloves garlic minced
    1 large head cabbage cored & sliced (I used red 'cuz that's what I grew)
    1 tbsp salt or to taste (I used lots less)
    1 tsp. ground black pepper
    1/2 tsp onion powder
    1/2 tsp garlic powder
    1/8 tsp paprika (didn't have any so I sustituted a few hits of cayanne pepper)

    Cook bacon in large stockpot over med-high heat 'til crispy, about 10 minutes.
    Add the onion & garlic, cook & stir 'til onion caramelizes, about 10 minutes.
    Immediately stir in the cabbage and continue to cook and stir another 10 minutes.
    Add seasonings, reduce heat to low, cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, about 30 minutes more.

    Interestingly you never pour off any bacon fat...it mixes in! Grok would be proud.

    Yummmmmmyyyyyy! I do a quick sort of stir fry.

    Cut up bacon into small hunks (I use 2 slices for 2 servings), brown in pan until starting to get crispy. Add apple slices (how many depends on how sweet you want it and what your carb intake is, for me about 1/3 of an apple). Cook a bit longer until apple starts to get soft. Add cut up cabbage and season with cinnamon. Cook until apple and bacon are both good and brown. Very very good!

        I'm definitely going to try this soon - I'm really enjoying cabbage currently.

        This is one of my favourite recipes, especially if I already have the oven on: Kalyn's Kitchen: Recipe for Roasted Cabbage with Lemon (I also usually a solid fat, obviously.)

          I've recently been roasting pretty much everything! Found this nifty little idea:

          Roasted Garlic Onion Cabbage

          1 head cabbage, cut into quarters
          4-5 cloves garlic, mashed or cut into slivers
          1 onion, quartered
          bacon fat
          sea salt to taste

          Oven at 350°. In baking dish, arrange cabbage and onions, cut sides up. Tuck garlic in between the leaves of the cabbage. Drizzle some bacon fat over the tops of the cabbage and onion, and salt to your liking. You can cover this with aluminum foil but I don't. Roast 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how you like the texture of your cabbage. Crispy? 30 minutes. The longer it goes, the softer it gets.

              My version included 1# of ground meat of choice. It is my go-to staple. Making some tomorrow morning. I am using napa cabbage which takes a lot less time to cook. If I keep all of the bacon grease and meat fat in the dish my husband won't eat it. More for me!

                Sounds like a good recipe. I just discovered bok choy last week which is apparently a type of cabbage. My quick and easy recipe is add some coconut oil to a pan. Cook the bok choy for 10 minutes with a lid on top of it. Add salt after cooking.

                  I just cooked some...I used a little coconut oil, with leeks and garlic and just a teaspoon or so or water, with salt and pepper , covered . WHen it was almost done, I added some stewed tomatoes! the color contrast of the purple and red is beautiful and its so yummy. So with or without bacon its great.

                      Simple, easy, comfort meal:

                      Sautée ground beef, add shredded cabbage, Sautée some more.

                      Add butter, salt, pepper, maybe garlic.

                      Eat!

                        Another one is to mix some wholegrain mustard with your fat of choice, then slowly fry shredded cabbage in it (we prefer to use butter, but any fat would be OK, I think). It's delicious with bacon in it, too.

                          I used to do this with rice. I had forgotten it until I saw this. Must do! (without rice of course)
