  • Lame question about canned salmon

    I'm not very adventurous, so please forgive the utter lameness of this question, but.

    What does one do with canned salmon, exactly?

    Can it be eaten straight out of the can? Does it need to be cooked? Does it require primal mayo, like tuna sometimes does?

    My room mate decided she didn't care for it and bequeathed about 10 cans to me. It's wild and cleanly sourced, I just have no idea what to do with it.

    I eat the stuff almost everyday now, straight out of the can. I just cant afford the fresh and with stuff coming in at around $2.50 a can you really can't beat that. Great source of fat, 650 cal, 85 grams of protein per can. Makes for a really good, quick, and nutritious lunch. I also don't worry about taking fish oil as I feel I get plenty of it from this stuff.

      You can certainly eat it straight out of the can and do not have to cook it. I often just add some capers, mustard, and thinly sliced red onion. Sometimes Greek yogurt too. You can make salmon patties/cakes by mixing with egg, chopped celery, etc. and cooking. It's good stuff. "You've got a gift, my friend" (said in my best Jim Gaffigan voice).

        Thanks, all! I've popped open a can and I'm having it for lunch right now. It took me a minute to get over how "fishy" tasting it is, but now I think I really like it.

        @yodiewan, I will totally be trying that salmon cake thing!

          I had some for lunch today in a salad. Love that briny goodness. And $2.50 a can in Al., very nice, just paid $4.69 here in L.A.

            For some reason I hate that stuff. I drown it in mayo and choke it down maybe its the brand

              I eat a can of Chicken-of-the-Sea every day. I pour coconut milk on it.

                I make "cakes" out of canned seafood frequently - tuna, salmon, etc.

                I just add an egg, a heaping teaspoon of coconut flour, a bit of coconut milk, and some spices... make them into patties... then cook them in butter in a hot pan until each side is golden.

                  You might try a salmon meatloaf. Put "canned salmon recipe" in the search engine of the forum AND the blog for some ideas. Let us know if there is one you esp. like.

                    Salmon patties are awesome. If you add an egg and season it well, it holds together pretty well without flour. I had some canned salmon salad for lunch. I fixed it just like tuna and put it over a green salad. I find the flavor and smell of canned salmon more appealing than tuna.

                      I was thinking of making zucchini strip noodles and then mixing canned salmon and pesto, warming that up and serving over the noodles. I eat canned salmon often right out of the can, but have been thinking of recipes I could do as quick dinner ideas when I don't feel like cooking anything too difficult.

                        I second (or third?) the patties suggestion. I squish meat, bones and most of the skin very well. Add egg(s), garlic powder, onion powder, salt, chili powder and/or paprika. Form patties and saute in olive oil till golden (approx. 3 min. on each side). I call this my healthy, inexpensive, quick and easy meal. Tastes awesome, too.

                            I love Salmon patties. I use 1 egg for 2 cans of salmon, add garlic and dill. I froze the extras for quick dinners. Yum!!

                              Had some today actually, Pacific wild caught. I can't remember if it is the Atlantic one that is not so great due to pollutants?? I like the stuff, it has some of those edible bony bits like sardines do, so some calcium there too. I reckon it would go well in some spicy thai style soup, will try that. And it is cheap, 1.60 GBP over here for 400 grm can. Tuna is fab too but I like some variety, and only buy fresh salmon when it's on a special.
