  • Sushi Fillings?

I got me a sushezi sushi maker and have all the rice and sushi nori I need, but not really a clue as for the filling. Avocado and cucumber for starters. Can I use raw fish from the frozen section? The fish counter in the supermarket? Where do people buy smoked salmon? I've never seen it before, just those overly expensive slices of salmon next to the cream cheese.

    Help, please?

Are you sure you're primal ? Rice ?

If I don't eat carbs I don't do well. However, that's not to the point.

      Any suggestions for fillings?

white rice is fine. you'll need to add rice wine vinegar and a bit of sugar if you want real sushi, but that's besides the point.

frozen fish (thawed, of course) should be the number one option! right?

Many people who eat primal include small amounts of white rice in their diet as it is a pretty innocuous starch.
It depends on the individual and the individuals goals.

          Filings...
          Find a GOOD fish monger.
Fresh fish goes best in sushi rolls.
Frozen fish loses taste and textural quality.

Smoked salmon or Lox is good... but you don't seem to like the price.
You could try the 'Krab' stuff which is made from white fish...
          Real steamed crab meat...
          Ahi tuna... raw
          Yellotail tuna... raw
          Snapper or seabass... raw
          Salmon... raw
          Fish roe (eggs)...
I particularly like conch and giant clam (geoduck) raw. *DROOL*
Also octopus is good IMO, but needs special prep...
A good red chili paste is indispensable for spicy rolls. NOM!

How about you go to a sushi bar... sample some sushi and see what you like.
Then try to replicate the rolls at home from internet recipes...

As an aside, the rice wine vinegar is used IIRC to replicate the traditional methods of fermenting the rice and fish. Has anyone ever eaten a fermented rice sushi roll? It sounds kind of ick, but fermented foods are worth investigating...

There is no fish monger out here. Is the fish from the supermarket no good? I'm an hour from the coast, but not sure if that matters. Does sushi fish need to undergo special tests for parasites or something?

Ikea has some mean crab paste, but not sure if its primal. Would something like that work? With a piece of cucumber and avocado?

Vegetable and avocado rolls are my favorites: cooked sweet potato, cuke, carrots, cooked shrimp, cooked lump crab, and avocado. I would even used canned salmon in a roll. I break Japanese hearts every time I eat sushi.

The two best I have found are avocado and salmon. You don't need smoked salmon though, just buy a fresh salmon fillet. Tuna is also awesome, but the good stuff can get pricey.

veggie rolls are also my favorites, and we do our rolls without rice. We just take whatever veggies we're in the mood for and roll them up in the seaweed. Deelish. Sometimes if we're in the mood for that rice texture, we'll grind up some cauliflower or carrot in our food processor and use that as a fake rice. Our favorite sushi fillings are cuke, carrots, avocado, pea sprouts (are those primal? not sure), and shiso leaf. Heck, I've even put zucchini in them sometimes. I suppose I could start adding fish into ours now that we're not vegan anymore, but raw fish grosses me out. Don't like smoked salmon either.

Cooked asparagus is an ok sushi filling. Slimy, yet satisfying.

                              Brrrrrr on the asparagus.

Still waiting on the consensus on raw fish from the supermarket.....would you?
