  • Need help with replacing ingredients please

    I need to find replacements for two different ingredients. I do not like curry at the taste of it makes me gag every time I have ever tasted it. I do like hot food, I just cant stand curry and I have many recipes that call for it. Also, I need a replacement for coconut aminos as I cannot find them anywhere. Any help would be great!

    If you enjoy puttering about in the kitchen, there is a cookbook titled "660 Curries" by Raghavan Iyer. Now I know you said you hate curries, but I have had this book in the house, and he lays out all the separate spices used in his curries, and his curries do not take a pro to put together. I am assuming that you know that "curry" is a lot like "seasoned salt" in that everybody makes theirs a little or a lot differently, depending on the spice house. You might find the one or two spices responsible for the gag reflex. That way you could save your recipes and maybe meet some new ways of getting dinner on.

    With my hubby, who is a chili head, it is anise and fennel seed, followed by caraway seed. His dislike for caraway seed is a bummer because my mom is a resident-alien German, and I was raised on and love the stuff.

    As for the coconut aminos, my local health food store carries them - perhaps you have tried there?? My local store will special order stuff for me as long as their supplier carries it, so ask at the customer service desk. And then try the Vitamin Shoppe. I don't know if many people know this, but they do carry the oddball assortment of raw vinegar, raw honey, dried berries, and other assorted items.

      Is it powdered curry leaf you don't like? Or all "curries" in general? I am not a huge fan of curry powder except in one recipe, but i love homemade spice mixtures - cumin, coriander, a touch of cinnamon, ginger, garlic, black pepper - there are tons of different combos you could try.

      As for coconut aminos - unless you are drinking gallons of it or have a soy allergy, I would just use wheat-free tamari. Or order the coconut aminos on line.

        I second Jammies on the gluten free tamari. The small amount you most likely need is unlikely to cause major problems. It's a good place to practice 80/20.

          I second ordering coconut aminos online. Amazon is the center of the shopping universe now.

            I'm not really sure what I don't like about curry but it probably is just the leaf that grosses me out. I guess I will have to make my own spice blend.

            I looked on Amazon for coconut aminos but I didn't want to pay the shipping cost. I will just have to wait until I can get them with my Prime membership. I will use the tamari for now. Thanks for all the suggestions.
