  • The Chocolate Connoisseur Thread

I thought it would be fun to have a thread where we weigh in on different chocolate brands, flavors, grades of darkness, etc. Right now I'm working my way through a Green & Blacks 85% dark bar. It's really fruity. Has a nice snap. Good mouth feel.

I've tried numerous different brands, and I think that the Green & Black 85% is the BEST. Very silky texture, low sugar, but not bitter. Yum.

I am also a fan of Green & Black's for the mouthfeel/texture. For a chocolate bar against other 85%s, it has a really rich chocolate taste, possibly from the slightly higher fat content.

My favorite, by far, though, is Valrhona chocolate, which is a French brand. And if I can ever get my hands on it, Galler chocolate from Belgium.

Lindt is a strong bar when it comes to price point and availability.

Another fan of Green and Black's 85% here.

Also, I occasionally treat myself to Green and Black's Cherry, which has bittersweet cherries and dark chocolate. It's a lot more sugary, but is a taste sensation.

For gourmet chocolates I shop at Hotel Chocolat. Naughty but very very nice:

i was at hyvee the day and bought these awesome single serve dark chocolate patties only ingredients are organic honey, organic unsweetened chocolate and peppermint oil. Shit was amazing. They had ones with almond and ginger too. Cant remember the brand though.

I like Green and Blacks 85%, but at the moment I tend to buy Lindt -- mostly because I can get 90% or 99% cocoa chocolate in Lindt. I really like the richness of the higher %age chocolates. And once you get used to them, the standard 72% bars taste too sweet.

We'll gladly explain this to anyone but you.

I've been eating Scharfen-Berger baking chocolate lately. It's labeled as 99% It's annoying to eat though, because it's not packaged for eating, so the pieces are huge and pieces flake off when you bite into it.

GF won't touch it. We bought a bunch of the Green & Black's 85 bars, which we both like. I find the texture and flavor to be much better than the Lindt 90, but I hear the 99 is on another level still (and priced accordingly).

I've been loading up on Godiva 86%. I also have some 90% Lindt in the cupboard. I find it hard to overeat on very dark chocolate. It's a great source of fiber, too!

One of my favorite chocolates to eat just for fun is the Chuao Firecracker bar. It's chipotle and pop rocks. It's awesome as far as mouth feel. So much fun. Vosges Mo's Bacon Bar is great too.
