  • Primal cooking in Japan

    After getting numerous questions and comments from friends and family about what we eat after seeing glimpses in photos we sometimes take, the girlfriend and I have decided to try our hand and keeping a blog about or culinary adventures in Japan.

    I just thought that people here might also enjoy a glimpse of Japanese ingredients, and Japanese inspired primal dishes. Maybe it will give people some new ideas; I'd also love to hear some feedback or ideas for other recipes.

    It's still very fresh and in flux, but take a look if you so please.

    Very good site...lots of food porn pictures. lol I love Japanese cuisine, and the food you feature looks positively scrumptious.

        Tokyo grokette here! So glad you linked your blog. Your breakfast picture inspired me to get out my 卵焼き pan again! Japanese Primal is just what I need, I really miss my miso soup too.

          One thing I loved when I was living in Japan was the quality and variety of fresh food that was available in the supermarkets there. Certainly it wasn't cheap, but good quality meats and produce were just as common, if not moreso, than at home in the USA. My only problem is that I had no idea how to tell what was wild-caught or grass-fed; the best I managed was to read enough kanji/katakana/hiragana to identify the country my food came from.

          My time in Japan definitely made me a healthier, more adventurous eater, even if natto still makes me want to vomit!

            Glad to hear that at least a few of you are liking it and have even been inspired to make some of it

            Yeah, the quality of most food here is generally as good or better than back in North America, however the labeling sucks in general. It's very hard to find anything organic or easily find out how your meat was raised. Thankfully wild fish at least are labeled as such. I do the best I can, but even with near fluent Japanese it wouldn't do much to help you find things like grass fed dairy or pastured eggs; have to make an educated guess in most cases and try to choose what seems best from available information. I suppose I could contact some of the manufactures of some of the things I buy to find out more about how their raised though.

            Natto I never hated, but it took a little while for me to actually like it. Now, though, it's a daily breakfast staple: MK-7 from the natto and MK-4 from the eggs, yoghurt and seafood (whole small fish).

              Englishman in Oz will be Englishman in Japan from June, so this is a timely post indeed. Been thinking of starting a thread asking for advice on Primal foods in Japan, looks like it's no longer needed. I've bookmarked your blog, I can see it's gonna be a big inspiration for me and the gf.

                THIS. I never noticed when I was young, but when I came back here for uni I was so surprised when I turned my carton of juice around to try to find how much sugar was in it, only to see that it wasn't listed! All of the supermarkets here label their fish "wild" or "farm-raised", but that's about it. There's no labeling for grass-fed or conventional beef, either.

                  Thanks Anzu. Please, call me Rob. My username is a little clunky! I'll be arriving late May/early June. Starting work on June 25th so will be arriving a few weeks early to find an apartment and settle in. Not sure yet where I'll be living, waiting for my placement location to be confirmed. Could be anywhere but unlikely Tokyo. Yokohama is a possibility though. I'll be sure to visit Tokyo anyway so your recs would be really appreciated. I'm sure I'm gonna love it in Japan, can't wait!

                      Everyone knows that Kansai is way better than Kanto anyway So much great food in Japan and very little fat phobia, so the grocery store meat is actually pretty good in general.

                        Had some an-kimo (a type of fish liver) the other day; what a great source of a nutrition and an incredible source of omega-3.

                            I have some natto culture, but I don't know where to get the tiny soybeans......that and I don't know if I can eat natto without a big bowl of rice!

                              The oysters were fantastic!

                              The natto we didn't use the tiniest of tiny beans (they're expensive) but just the regular medium sized ones; you don't absolutely need the tiny beans, but huge ones are no good either I guess.

                              What's stopping you from making some good miso soup? The only challenge would be finding a good miso I guess -- could always make some if you were up for the challenge.
