  • Thanksgiving Help

    Ok need some help. I am hosting Thanksgiving this year for about 9 people. Only 2 of which are primal. I know I will have to give the masses what they want on some stuff but I was hoping to merge the two. The obvious ones that most everyone likes and we can "sneak" in are Brussels with Bacon and Roasted sweet potatoes. I would love some suggestions on stuffing, other side dishes and gravy. Also, my father is highly allergic to peanuts so I won't be able to use anything of the sort.

    Check out White Lion Baking Co for rolls and stuffing. They are filling Turkey Day orders NOW, so if you think it's an option for you, be sure to get your order in the next few days.
    You can also go the sausage/veggie route for stuffing

    next, instead of chips & dip, take the chopped veggies route. We always have a veggie platter at holiday gatherings. Red bell pepper, broccoli, cucumbers, pickles, etc. The chipotle mayo recipe on my blog (link below) makes a great dip IMO.
    I also have a smashed cauliflower recipe on my site too

    for dessert, don't be afraid to take the ice cream/gelato route. Breyers, Haagen Dasz 5, and Talenti Gelato all have short, recognizable ingredient lists.
    I will be posting some pretty awesome pie recipes the week of Turkey Day, plus there are more online at other paleo sites.

      I am working on my own traditional Thanksgiving dinner. I have hosted many times in the years past with healthy substitutions the whole family loved without knowing it. This year I am testing out some new recipes and have been posting them on my blog as I "test them". I have two different stuffings and two desserts right now.

      Pumpkin Pie with Nut Crust
      Sausage and Apple Stuffing
      Primal Pumpkin Bake
      Sausage and Cranberry Dressing

      Yet to come, good ol' green bean casserole with a homemade mushroom soup and a crunchy almond/onion topping, creamy mashed cauliflower w/gravy and dinner rolls.

        Thanks Dr. BB and Vanessa for the stuffing ideas! I was wondering if anyone serves an additional main meat course? Is turkey the main event? I like turkey okay, but I'm not all that excited by turkey...I'd love to hear some primal ways to make turkey more awesome.

        We're also hosting, for eight of my in-laws, maybe a couple more. I'm the only primal so it will be a pretty regular dinner where I just pass on some of the dishes. But we're also going to have two kinds of stuffing and I haven't decided if I just want sausage and veg. in "my" stuffing or if I want wild rice in there, too.

        Edit: the link in Dr. BB's post definitely looks like a great way to make turkey more awesome with duck fat!

            For me, it's all about the 16 lb turkey...
            and the pie.
            Not gonna lie. Thanksgiving & Christmas are my mega baking joys, and hubby takes over the bird.
            Everyone always raves about how wonderful and juicy the meat he cooks comes out!

              I'm making Thanksgiving and it will be mostly Primal even though I have non-Primal guests attending. I'm the cook. They can deal with it. Here's my tentative menu:

              Turkey (smoked and grilled on my Traeger)
              Stuffing (this won't be primal. I will make cornbread stuffing though so at least there's no wheat)
              Mashed potatoes (we eat regular white/yellow/red potatoes occasionally)
              Roasted sweet potatoes
              Cranberry sauce (I'll find a way to make this mostly primal with honey instead of sugar)
              Broccoli salad with apples, dried cranberries, slivered almonds.
              Maybe some brussel sprouts w/ bacon

              My mom will bring pumpkin pie and whip cream for dessert, and it won't be Primal, but I will thoroughly enjoy have one piece.

                I just easily sold my husband on the duck fat idea, but what does your husband do to make the turkey so great, or is it a family secret?

                  He cooks it in a turkey roaster bag.
                  Normally I HATE when he cooks stuff in those stupid bags, but this is the one thing it actually does a good job on.

                    Soaking your turkey in brine for 24 hours before cooking always results in a juicy, juicy bird AND it cooks faster.

                    This year (I'm Canadian, we had thanksgiving already ), we had 12 people over. I did traditional mashed potatoes, I don't mind having them as a treat. I did primal stuffing, with bacon, green beans, roasted carrots and pumpkin custards and apple jellos for dessert. Because I brined the turkey, the 14 lbs bird was ready in 2.5 hours. I had already prepped everything before hand and just warmed the food as I was making gravy. It was the first year where I was only in the kitchen for 30 mins when the guests were here. And about 2 hours earlier in the day, not bad at all!

                      I used to deep fry turkey. Best results in peanut oil, but given that I'd rather not use a seed oil to fry, any suggestions? Fried turkey is so freakin' good I'd like to keep up the tradition if possible.

                        +1 on the oven bag. Its the only time we ever use them, but my wife's turkey always comes out spectacular. She cooks it with the cornbread stuffing in the bottom and there is a fair amount of stock added to the stuffing. I think that provides some moisture as well. It always super moist and it is the best meal of the year even for a family of pretty picky eaters.
