  • Soft Paleo Foods (for post-oral procedures)

    In a few weeks, I'll get getting some oral surgery and I'm looking to be prepared. Recovery time should be less than a week (so maybe a good time for some serious fasting), but during recovery I'm told I should only have soft food. In my head I'm thinking soft cooked eggs and vegetable purees.

    Has anyone been in a similar situation and have any suggestions?

    sweet potatoes, mashed.
    cauliflower mashed (though the work required makes them undesirable for me)

    As far as protein goes surely eggs are a great option, maybe ground beef as well.

      Soups. Prepare these ahead and freeze. You're not going to feel up to cooking postop.

        You can also blend your soups, meat and all, my mom used to do that for me because I hated soup, it doesn't taste bad at all. Obviously try not to cook stuff with bones, though I guess it may not be a huge deal if you blend thoroughly enough.

          I made some pumpkin custards that are pretty good: Heat some cream/milk (or coconut milk if you want a truly paleo dessert) till it's steaming. Whip a few eggs or egg yolks till mixed well. Drizzle the hot cream into the yolks while whisking. Return the mixture back to the heat and cook until you get to nappe stage (coats the back of a spoon). Take off the heat then add in canned pumpkin and spices/extracts (vanilla, cinnamon, etc.). Pour into baking cups. Bake in a water bath until mostly set, but still jiggly in the middle. Eat warm or chilled.

          I also made Primal Haupia as Dr. Bork Bork outlined. Basically, heat some coconut milk, bloom some gelatin in a separate container of cold coconut milk, then add the bloomed mixture to the hot coconut and cook breifly, then set into a mold and chill. Her recipe called for three packets of gelatin for one can of milk. I only used two and it was very thick. If you want a soft texture, maybe just use one.

            Mashed potatoes, baked sweet potatoes, bananas, white rice, ground meat, scrambled eggs, Greek yogurt and veggie based soups and chilies are all great starts. A tomato-based chili with very fine ground beef over short grain white rice with a 3 egg cheese omelet on the side could make an awesome meal.

              Protein pudding & sludge. I know whey protein isn't the best option, but it's an option. Mix whey with greek yogurt for protein pudding, add some nut butter for sludge.
              Baked custard makes a great hot breakfast.

                I've had 3 oral surgeries recently - two in September, the last one a week ago, and a fourth super long one last December, all complete with full general anesthesia, so I prepared foods ahead of time for the days after ... I cooked chicken breasts as well as venison and then ran each through the food processor, did a super fine chop of onions, mixed each with a little bit of homemade mayo (just enough to moisten it well) and had a meat spread. Boiled eggs, smashed up well with a fork, either separate or added to the meat spread. Steamed and smashed veggies (cauliflower, zucchini and yellow squash were my main ones) and I did a lot of egg white shakes. I also did some ground meat.

                    Sweet potato, squash, parsnips, and beef (chuck) slow cooked over about 3 hours... soft, yummy, and nutritious. The potatos should dissolve into the broth and the parsnips and meat should be soft enough to eat without chewing, given you cut small enough.

                      You stole all of mine! Mashed veggies and creamed/pureed soups. You can add almond butters to certain soups (curry are the first to come to mind).
                      Smoothies would be great too although I really prefer soup to smoothies. Don't forget carrots, parsnips, winter squashes and cauliflower for soup.

                      Here's one for when you start healing

                      Chicken carrot ragout.

                      2 cups carrots chopped
                      4-6 chicken thighs (skin removed) Chopped
                      1 onion, diced
                      2 ribs of celery, diced

                      Sautee onion and celery in butter for 5 minutes on medium heat. Add carrots. Sautee on higher heat until everything is browned and softening. Add chicken and stir well. Lower heat and cover with lid. Cook indefinitely, checking occasionally to see if you need to add stock or water. Generally the veggies let off enough moisture to create a nice sauce that needs little moisture added but the mixture should have some sauce to it. You can cook this down to almost mush if you want to. It is GREAT!
