  • Shepherd's Pie

I had never had it before, but I decided to try to make it last night. Oh wow. I'm definitely gonna make it again. Very good way to use up ground beef, and it's easy to pack a ton of veggies in there.

For the filling, I used a small cut of steak (one of my roommates told us to use it up since he went home for a week - hooray for free meat), bunch of ground beef, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, half an onion, and a bit of tomato sauce. The top is generally made of mashed potatoes but I used mashed sweet potatoes (with an ample amount of butter of course), which worked out great. Nice mix of sweet and savory overall.

Now I have 5 servings of the pie left...plus about two pounds of ground beef in the freezer to figure out something to do with.

Shephards pie is my favorite! I've been making it about once a week.

We make it using mashed cauliflower as the "potato" topping.

Mashed cauliflower topping here too, it is one of our absolute favorite meals! Probably once per week like DCKMB. Meat, pearl onions, carrots, beef broth, spices, topped with mashed cauliflower and roasted in the oven. Perfect meal!!!

How does the mashed cauli taste? I've never had it. I've cut down on my taters since going primal but I don't enjoy eating a lot of veggies esp because of their texture. Thanks.

I love mashed cauliflower! I use cook up some frozen cauli., then use my hand blender to puree it with butter, salt, and pepper. To me, the texture is close to potatoes and it has a slightly sweeter taste.

Also sorry for asking something that I'm sure has been covered but what's the best way to make mashed sweet potatoes? I've been grilling them and cutting them open. I'm sure there's an easier way. Thanks.

Do you own a pressure cooker? Peel them, slice them. Steam them in a pressure cooker for 5-8 minutes. Then mash them in a bowl. Quick and easy.
