  • How fat is your ground beef?

    Pre-PB I would get the leanest hamburger available 90-95%. I have often wondered while shopping but had not asked the experts (you!!), your thoughts on this.

    Thanks.

    P.S. looking to make some meatza but do not want it dry

    Low fat everything is one of the worst mistakes the food industry has made and our health suffers because of it. Get full fat. Tell your grocer you want full fat if you can't find it. Beef fat in particular is very healthy. High in saturated and monounsaturated fats, low in pufa's.

      So are we talking about 80/20 meat or higher fat?

        Depends on what kind of cow you're buying. If it's grass-fed, go for the fatty stuff. If you have to make do with grocery-store grain-fed meat, go for the leanest you can get because that way you're avoiding all the O6s and other nasties.

        Also, this is the meatza recipe I use with lean beef - it's never dry!

          ^ Agreed.

          I get 25% fat grass-fed (tons of CLA in this) via US Wellness Meats. In a pinch, I can get emergency protein at Trader Joe's, 20% fat, grass-fed, but the 25% has quite a bit more precious CLA than the 20%.

          CLA = belly fat buster, plus a whole lot more.

            We typically use ground bison. I'm working on convincing the TW to buy more grass-fed fattier meats.

              I buy the lower fat ground beef if it is grain-fed. But absolutely LOVE Trader Joe's 100% grass-fed ground beef. It is $5.99/lb and is 85/15 lean to fat. For some reason my kids think it tastes like it has cheese in it. I have had other "grass-fed" ground beef but it didn't taste this good. I usually brown it with an onion and a little coconut oil and add miscellaneous veggies and eat any and all the fat. Highly recommend if you have a TJ's nearby.
              Our Costco was also selling Verdi Farms ground beef which claims to be grass-fed. It was about $13-14 for three one pound packs 85/15. Good price but not as tasty as TJ's.

                i have used grocery store 80/20 for my meatza crusts and found it to be REALLY greasy. im going to try a leaner beef next time. maybe even some ground turkey

                  I try to get at least 77/23 or 70/30 if I can get it. Yay fat!
                  Primal eating in a nutshell: If you are hungry, eat Primal food until you are satisfied (not stuffed). Then stop. Wait until you're hungry again. Repeat.

                      I don't buy ground beef anymore. After watching the Jamie Oliver's Food Revoltion episode on making ground beef s I just can't do it. Kitchen Aid plus food grinder and now I can grind any cut of meat I want.

                            I can only afford commercial meat, so i get x-lean restaurant grade, and add in a little fat later.
