  • Hamburger Bun Recipe?

    Okay, so I was reading through Mark's Daily Apple during this past week, and somehow ended up on another person's blog, that I SWEAR was linked to by Mark, and there was a recipe for Hamburger Buns that had coconut flour, flaxseed meal, sunflower seeds, and other ingredients, but I cannot for the life of me find it now. I believe it was posted around the 4th, because I remember reading something about it being "just in time" for the 4th. Help?

    I don't know about the "McGrok" but I follow a recipe for a bread using almond flour that would be perfect for making a breakfast sandwich.

    1/4 cup almond flour
    1 TBSP butter, melted
    1 tsp. baking powder
    1 egg
    dash of salt
    Mix and then put into buttered ramekin or small bowl. Microwave for 1 minute 20 seconds. Remove and slice.

    A three inch ramekin is about the perfect sammich size. It makes enough for two sandwiches for me but slice it think and only use it as a vehicle for what I'm putting in it. I love it and so does my 8 year old. He's a bread fanatic and hates that I don't keep it in the house but this works for him. Good luck!

      I skip the bun -- mock or otherwise -- by creating a "burger salad". I lay down a big bed of lettuce/greens, place the burger patty atop it, and then put on all the fixings I normally would on a burger. Absolutely delicious way to do it! As an added bonus, there is no room on my plate for chips or fries, so it's even healthier.

      I know, I know... this doesn't answer your actual question, but I thought I'd offer an alternative. To me it's far tastier than a faux-bun AND it ends up being healthier as well. Win-win!

        I ate 4 McD quarter pounders yesterday. Juicy. Left the 8 bun halves. The black coffee is quite good too.

            Copied this from one of the threads and saved it in a document for myself, is this it?

            The Bread

            Your Hardware:
            A square or round glass container roughly the size of bread with a flat bottom.

            Your Software:
            1/4th cup flax meal or almond meal (they are both delicious)
            2 tbsp fat (coconut oil or butter)
            1 tsp baking powder
            1 egg

            Mix all of that together very well and then pour it in your container. Microwave it for 1 minute 20 seconds. Now pop it out of the container and onto a plate and let it cool off and firm up a bit.

            For another piece of bread. Repeat.

              @gunnk and localad, I usually forgo the bread on all occasions as well. I love ordering huge burgers sans bread. I've had grain allergies (which is actually what led me to the primal lifestyle to begin with) for several years, and this seems the first "diet" (though I'm hesitant to call it that) that I can stick with. I don't even miss sweet things anymore, much less bread. That being said, I occasionally host for other people and people who have allergies who are not as into this as I am, so I like to accommodate. My boyfriend is a carb fanatic who so far in his life can get away with it, and I would like to begin baking "bread" that is good for him, rather than detrimental.

              @Rebecca M, YESSSSSSSSSS That was it. THANK YOU. Seriously, I spent hours looking for that thing.

              For everyone else, I totally appreciate the recipes and I will add them all to my repertoire to try out sometime. For now, I think a steak for dinner....

                I made the buns on Lauren's (healthy indulgences) blog the other day. They're very, very good. That being said, they aren't going to fool you into thinking you're eating a squishy white bread bun. I made six from the recipe and they turned out slightly larger than a "slider" bun. Mine also didn't rise much, but I'm not sure how puffy they're able to get since they're quite dense. I'm sure I'll make these again because sometimes I really like holding a sandwich in my hands, but next time I think I'll make four instead of six.
                My husband and I had bacon burgers (grass fed of course!) and they were delish! The next day I had one toasted with eggs and bacon and they got better sitting overnight.

                    alternative flours can run up your grocery bill. Portabello mushroom caps will work in a pinch (and taste amazing)
