  • Instead of beer...ideas?

Ok, it's summer. I work hard, outside, a lot.

Coming indoors to a frosty beer sounds great. But I cut out alcohol, for the most part, a year ago.

What do you go for instead?

Iced tea comes to mind. Or water with cucumber or citrus.

    What else?

How about a giant frosty mug full of self control?

Um, self control isn't the issue, Chairdr. At peril of sounding arrogant, I have more self control than anyone I know.

Note that I nixed the alcohol over a year ago. I drink only occasionally, at social events (and I'm not the social-event type.)

I'm not looking for excuses -- just for some interesting summer-drink ideas.

I go with a giant glass of iced tea myself... or cold water right out of the hose is another option...

I have a jasmine white/ green/ oolong tea that I make and cool. That with ice and cucumbers makes a damn fine summer drink after mowing the yard.

Iced tea (and in my new apartment I'll be able to make sun tea, yay!) or ice-cold water. Normally I put a bit of lemon or lime juice in it. Sometimes I'll have an iced coffee, but not often.

I've gotten so that I can drink water now. For the longest time before going primal I wouldn't drink plain water ever. I'd have to put lemon in water if nothing else was available. Iced tea would work for me too though.

I would never give up the occasional beer on a hot summer day.

If you do dairy, goat milk and homemade kefir from the same are both quite tasty. The kefir does have that slight effervescence that seems to be so satisfying.

There's something perfect about a frothy cold beer in the middle of a hot sweaty day of manual labor. I cannot imagine a replacement. I'm willing to admit it doesn't exist. I haven't had a beer in since late April, but I am working hard in the tomato rows today and it's over 100 outside. A beer sounds great. I drink a ton of water, but it just isn't the same.

I wonder if a combo of juiced veggies would work? They come out a little frothy and pulpy. It would have to be ice cold. Hmmm.

I was going to suggest ginger beer or shandy, but I don't like beer to start with so no idea how those subs would compare.... but I think iced tea etc would be a healthier choice anyway

Thanks, all. So far, iced tea is winning. I usually wrap up my work late in the day, so I'm going with iced herbal teas for now (no caffeine). Peppermint tea is good in a chilled glass with lots of ice.

I drink a lot of plain water throughout the day, but sometimes you want to come in to something different, ya know?

Why not have a nice ice cold, frosty potato.
