  • Curious of causes behind mental clarity, energy, etc. DURING a fast?

It also happens after exercise. It actually makes fasting somewhat addictive because I become so happy, get such an ability to focus even on tedious tasks like math homework -- actually enjoying it somehow, too! I'm better at problem-solving equations, reading, understanding, etc. I find that I'm even better socially, more fluid & expressive. A true sense of joy overwhelms me, music sounds better, colors are brighter. I know it has to do with neurotransmitter interactions but am curious if anyone has insight behind what's actually going on in the brain during these times. For me, it's so extreme it feels as if I took some sort of drug. It's actually acted as quite an anti-depressant for me. For me it's most prominent & enjoyable towards the end of a fast and I also experience what I've described during the hours after intense exercise. I'm guessing it's an increase in dopamine & nor-epinephrine but does anyone know why fasting causes an (almost immediate) increase in these neurotransmitters, like exercise?

It's your body's way of helping you stay focused so you can hunt down and murder some food even in lean times.

My guess is that fasting stimulates grehlin which in turn stimulates dopamine.
