I can't say I really notice smelling like coconut, but I guess I am used to it. No one has ever said anything though.

I love using coconut oil, mostly for my face, but I do use it full body at times. I have to say I'm basically lazy when it comes to applying lotion all over. I think that I generally don't need to because my diet has so much fat and no more of the icky stuff that caused skin problems.

Transporting can be an issue... ditto on the ziploc. It's hard to keep oils contained, and in a purse that can be dangerous! I would maybe just take a small jar to leave at work, where it seems the majority of your handwashing occurs! If you have some at work and at home I really don't think you'll need to have it with you at all times...

Luckily my hubs loves the smell of coconut (reminds him of the beach and he loves the sun and sand)!

And yes... coconut oil works very well as a lubricant. It's also anti-bacterial :-)

This. I keep a small jar at work. I don't carry it around. If I go out of town, I use the jar and put it in a ziploc to avoid any unfortunate heat accidents.

The only one who notices I smell like coconut is my dog.

I make my own bath and body stuff, professionally, so I'll chime in.

A good source for coconut oil, cosmetic grade is Magestic Mountain Sage. I've dealt with them before and they are a reputable company. As I'm in Canada I have a canadian supplier for the heavier oils like this, but I've bought other things from them and they have an excellent reputation among soapers.

As for the melting issue, best bet is to blend it with another more solid oil, say cocoa butter. I would also add a starch to it as well, something like arrow root powder as it helps to cut the greasies.

You can also blend arrow root powder and coconut oil together to make a paste and use that as deodorant.

Oh, and I also make shampoo bars, BEST thing ever. LOL!

I'm still working on getting the right balance to use on my face. Seems like it always leaves me greasy, then gets into my hair and makes that greasy as well. So I tend to use it more often at night when it doesn't really matter. I haven't noticed any staining on my clothes from using it. And I don't notice a coconut smell either, but maybe I am just used to it. I use Nutiva, and found it at vitaminshoppe.com, $21 for 54 oz. Also, I second that it makes a great massage oil and lubricant, seriously, try it.....awesome! Look at it as multitasking.....you're moisturing your body and having some fun!

Now were talking!!! I will never look at my Nutiva the same way again.

                  Do you sell your products?

Someone else mentioned using it for their hair. How do you do that?

Elorajade.. yeah, let us know if you have a site. I was just thinking about you the other day when I was TRYING to buy just plain soap. I haven't found anyone local to buy from, though I'm looking, but I'm really trying to find the kind you spoke of before... just good moisturizers. Stuff that doesn't strip your skin... no chemicals, all that stuff. I'd be up for a shampoo bar, too... I did try the ones from lush a long time ago, but then they use a lot of chemicals I'm getting away from... would love a more natural option!

Tried the no-poo and didn't work so well for me, though I only shampoo my hair once a week as it is. Would just like to do it with something natural!!

Yes, I sell commercially the more....acceptable things. I'm desperately trying to convert people away from lotions/butters with added water (then you get into preservatives and other stuff), but most have the idea that the water based stuff is somehow better than the pure oils and butters. Sound familiar?!! There is other stuff I make for people, non commercially because there are a lot of hoops to jump through when making certain products that I should not be selling commericially, but that is usually more of a "thank you gift" along with a purchase. Ahem.

                      my website is www.creativewanderings.ca

Most of what I sell is soap, thats my biggest seller. For natural lotion sticks, I have a tattoo balm (all natural) very good moisturizer, the other is a scented stick that people can carry with them, leave at a desk etc. No worries about it going funky over time, no water, no chemicals, just all butters and oils. I also have a "helping hands" hand balm, good for psoriasis & ezcema, and also just for very dry hands/body parts.

Frankly though, if you have dry skin, you don't *NEED* lotions/butters at all. IF your diet is correct and if you're using natural soaps and shampoos, your oil glands are happy and self regulate. If you use commercial products, they contain things like SLS and SLSA that strip the natural oils from your skin and hair which actually causes oily or super dry body and hair.

I'm in the middle of testing a shampoo bar (two actually, one with Aloe the other with beer, along with various helpful essential oil blends) and all my testers cannot beleive the difference. One woman who was a chronic salon shampoo buyer gave my bars a shot because I had already converted her on the soap front. She called me and started screaming in my year that she had spent thousands of dollars on salon stuff to try and battle her frizzies and a "silly little bar of soap" fixed it in two washes. LOL! Male testers have reported an increase in hair growth where it was once thinning - not sure if I beleive that, however I beleive that it may be increasing body and therefore they may think its regrowing hair. All positive reviews, I don't think I need to tweak them at all, they won't be ready for official sale for a few more months, I'm looking at about mid July.

I'm actually surprised you hadn't heard of that, Beefy. Just be aware that CO may degrade latex products...if you know what I mean.

Nope, never heard of that. Personal lubrication has never really been an issue with me and my partners as I take the time to prime the pump, so to speak, prior to churning the butter. *cocks head sideways and goes hypoxic in brain for a moment*

Keep in mind that even with the most thorough priming, specific stages of life can trigger the need for some additional help. Some breastfeeding moms have extremely low estrogen levels and simply will not lubricate sufficiently even with the most thoughtful, attentive, skilled lover....same with menopausal women whether menopause is natural, chemical (ie chemotherapy) or surgical (hysterectomy/oophorectomy).
