  • Antibiotics for toddler

My daughter is 2 years 8 months and got her first ear infection 2 days ago. She's been running a fever on and off for the past 2 days as well, mild to 102ish.

She's been crying about ear pain and so I took her to the doctor to make sure it isn't anything serious. The doctor confirmed she has ear infection in both ears and prescribed antibiotics.

I asked how necessary the antibiotic is for her case, and the dr said well the child is miserable so this will help relieve pain... Otherwise just let the ear infection run its course and build her immune system. She even said the antibiotic may not be 100% effective.

Just wanted to ask other parents what would you do?

You could do two things (unless someone else has another option)

Give antibiotics now, which can take up to 24hrs to work

Wait till day 4 (or however long the Dr said it would take to run its course) give pain relief as needed, and if she is still sick at the end of day 4, start the antibiotics.

With what I know now I would have waited with my children.

My son has only had antibiotics once. Unless it's serious we don't use them.
I would just offer her pain relief and let the infection run its course.

How serious is serious? And how long does it take to recover from an ear infection without antibiotics?

Dilute hydrogen peroxide in the ear will help clear it.

Breastmilk if you have any would be the first thing to try actually.

Damn, I haven't had to deal with an ear infection yet but I've read of good remedies just trying to think...

I know there'd be an essential oil you could use. Maybe tea tree oil? If you could google to find out. Sorry im not much help my brain is fried.

Some sites that might have some info for you... WellnessMama and Mommypotamus (I think I spelt that right!).

Ear infections can get bad apparently so id definitely try something natural to help clear it. I wouldn't want to use the abi's unless absolutely necessary.

Boosting general immune system would help too. Echinacea tea or capsules, elderberry syrup, vitamin D and C, and rest.
          Poor bub!

THESE for sure. I kept frozen breast milk in the freezer for years after I stopped breastfeeding for just this use. Also works great on an eye infection.

Antibiotics will make her feel better almost immediately so if shes really miserable, id go for it. Antibiotics arent devistating, just make sure she takes a probiotic or breast milk.

Probiotics don't work while taking an antibiotic, it just makes the antibiotics work harder.
They don't work immediately but take two or three doses to (so up to 24hrs)

I second the peroxide. I have even used it for my own ear infections and it does help. Let it sit in the ear as long as she will let you (a few minutes). I'm also a big believer in vitamin C - she might take something like Emergen-C which will give a big dose or you could give her oranges, etc.

I put some breastmilk in her ear when the infection started a few days ago.

Well, I decided on the wait-and-see approach after we got home from the doctor yesterday. I filled in the prescription for the antibiotic just in case.

Last night, when she had a mild fever and was crying about the pain in her ear, I tried to give her tylenol. I chased her around the apartment. At the end she spat all the tylenol out and said Mama, NO OUCHIE. She stopped crying and fell asleep eventually.

She didn't have fever anymore after midnight, and got up this morning in a good mood. So far so good.

If you end up using hydrogen peroxide, I recommend warming it slightly. I put it in a dropper and set the dropper in hot (tap) water. You don't want it hot but warm feels a lot better than cold.

Your talking to a stranger on the internet, yeah?
You don't know what knowledge said person has.
So therefore it's best to state everything, like take probiotics after the antibiotics.

Maybe I just think differently in this aspect.

I've never used hydrogen peroxide for anything. Maybe I should keep some on hand.

HP is great. It's very inexpensive and can be used for a lot of things. When I feel a sore throat coming on I immediately gargle with a mixture of half HP and half warm water. I do this every couple of hours. I've stopped many sore throats this way. This Winter I told my brother about it and he tried and sure enough it worked for him too.
