        Big sugar & corn companies are scared, and I love it. They know sugar is bad, they've known it for years, they don't care. They know how to manipulate us with food that hits those sensors in our brains, our evolved brains. They have essentially hacked our brains.
        Frickin A, they are just unable to take NO for an answer. WE DON'T WANT YOUR DAMN FRANKEN CORN sweetener we don't care if you make it with fairy dust from Tinkerbell's ass. WE NO WANT.
        No means no Cargill Corn Milling. NO means NO! I have an old "rape whistle" my mom had when she was a teen....... I will use it Cargill Corn Milling, I will use it.

          I'm not sure I share the hate on this. Why not use a ubiquitous crop to produce the same chemicals? Either way you are refining some plant leaf down to a couple of chemicals, the same chemicals. You could argue big corn yadda yadda and on that I would agree, but in the end you do not need stevia anymore than you need corn syrup so it's not like they are putting an evil taint on some wholesome food.

            If I steep it in boiling water, will it make the water sweeter? I don't drink either alcohol or tea (I know, I know, but I have my reasons).

              I just googled Cargill. Cargill, Inc. isn't publicly traded, but what used to be Cargill Fertilizer is traded as Mosaic. Interesting company. Does everything. Lurid and profitable. Child labor violations, deforestation... Anyway it's some fun reading.

              More than big vs small is the fact that GMO corn has now been approved for human consumption. I don't believe all big companies suck - from a consumer's perspective anyway. Costco and Amazon have been easy places to shop and always deliver what they say they're going to deliver. At this point, I'd rather just avoid corn and its products as much as possible.

              Can you grow stevia plants in pots? ETA: sorry about that. I should have googled first. You can grow them in pots.

                Yeah, and this is fermented. We're all about fermentation around here. I'd want to see how it turns out before I damn it to heck.

                  How annoying. I don't eat stevia bc it gives me a migraine.
                  Needing some accountability, so here's my stats:
                  34yrs old, 5'5"
                  CW: 163lbs (07/2014)
                  GW: 135lbs or less
                  Eating mainly paleo, but including a bit of white rice (don't call the Paleo Police!)

                    I've never tried it but it works with mint so I don't see why not. I don't know how sweet your water would get though.

                      i don't think you'd even need to boil it, just crush some leaves in a glass, or crush more leaves in a pitcher and let sit a while

                      i and my dogs occasionally pluck a leaf off the plant and eat it, they're pretty sweet

                        Yeah, Cargill is one of the big bad ones. Their name is often used in the same sentence as Monsanto.

                        The problem is that everybody has bought the marketing hype that stevia is natural. How many commercials have you seen pushing this idea? Well, if you read that article about how they get the two chemicals in stevia out of the corn you can put 2 and 2 together and understand that they're using similar industrial processes, minus the fermentation which is what they've added for corn, to get the chemicals out of stevia as well. Stevia isn't as natural as most people think.

                        So either give up artificial sweeteners or make your own sweetener from stevia you grow in your garden.

                          I think that's a great idea. In fact, until I can manage to stop killing every plant I touch (except the scary lucky bamboo I have), I'm ordering some palm sugar. One teaspoon in two cups of coffee isn't going to kill me. And the few times a month I make a curry dish also isn't going to set me up for much carb increase. But I am going to use up whatever stevia I still have.

                            Your stevia probably already comes from corn if you purchased a powdered stevia. They're packed in some type of sugar or sugar alcohol - xylitol, erythritol, sorbitol, maltodextrin, etc, and those products are typically grain-based. So chances are it's more corn than stevia to begin with.

                              Um, why is this bad? It's not like you'll be eating the corn. You'll eat the steviosides, which are technically made by fungi... And fungi are primal. :P

                              Anyway, I think this kind of panicmongering is extremely unscientific and highly illogical. If you can afford the leaf, buy it. If you can grow it, grow it. But fungi-produced stevioside sweeteners in Diet Coke will still make for a much healthier drink than aspartame, or HFCS in the "real" Coke for that matter.

                              Corn is not some kind of demon that soils everything it touches. The reason we don't like it isn't because it's EEEEVIL, but because it's full of bad carbs and low on valuable micronutrients. We feed corn to pigs, so why not feed it to fungi? Come on people, being primal shouldn't mean being luddites. It's not like the bad carbs will somehow "transfer" to the stevioside!

                              And as for "natural", how about eating a death cap mushroom, it doesn't get any more natural than that?!
