  • Breast cancer

My non-Primal landlady/housemate has been diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer. Apparently, it has not spread and she is just having a lumpectomy (sp?) then radiation.

She actually eats fairly Primal because I cook dinner and she has been having eggs (and sometimes bacon) for breakfast. She does eat some bread and pasta.

Any suggestions for how I can help her?

You need to explain to her that cancer cells are different from the rest of the cells in the body in that they can only run on sugar. If you go into ketosis, making your body run on ketones, the cancer cells have no food and die off. So, the take home message is every time you eat sugar or refined carbs that turn into sugar quickly, you are feeding your tumor.

I am NOT advocating firing the oncologist. Absolutely follow their advice on real medical treatment. Dietary therapy is an adjunct to that however that can help get any "stray" cancer cells out and not let them take hold anywhere else.

She is very lucky that they caught it early. My heart goes out to her. Take good care of her.

+1000! for the ketogenic diet from a fellow breast cancer survivor. Also, look into including anything to support her immune system.

Nothing to add, other than good luck wishes. Caught early = very good.

Yes to keto diet and if she can get her D3 level tested, she would help support her immune system by sunning/supplementing to a blood level of 80-100 ng/ml. (This higher blood level is only recommended for cancer and autoimmune disease.) Make sure she supplements Magnesium, too.

Be sure she gets follow-up monitoring very closely, especially at the 5yr mark. She should know that breast cancer often returns in other parts of the body around that time (often in the brain). My mom had a small tumor removed and was "cancer free" for 5 years, taking Tamoxifen I believe, after radiation but no chemo. Just after her 5yr anniversary for initial treatment, they found cancer all over her body and she passed away 6 weeks later. This is not said to scare you, but rather for her to remain vigilant. If my mom's doctors had paid closer attention to her complaints of pain, they would have found some of the tumors earlier.

                Sigh. It's hopeless.

She had actually asked me for advice and listened. So I thought there was a chance. But she dogmatically believes that whatever the docs and nutritionists say is the word of god.

Five years ago, we both heard Mark speak at a running club we belonged to. I started doing more and more primal. She quickly decided that she didn't want to be a "cavewoman." I have never pushed primal but I do mention things from time to time, especially things that show primal is not about being a cavewoman. She ought to be impressed by the fact that I have lost lots of fat and that my health is much better.

Anyway, my friend went on line and read all the CW stuff. I had told her to cut carbs and especially sugar. She went out and bought oatmeal, quinoa, lots of fruit (especially grapes), etc. So now she is less primal than before.

She might try supplements such as D3, turmeric, magnesium, etc.

                  Sigh indeed,

I have a dear friend who is dealing with spinal tumors right now. He's had the surgery and radiation so the chemo is next. At first he asked me about diet and I gave him all the links, etc.

Now he tells me, "Oh yes, I have really cleaned up my diet. I don't eat meat at all any more."

                  face/palm.

I'm confused by this. People who are in ketosis still have normal blood sugar levels. So don't the tumors have access to plenty of sugar anyway?

WHen you have been in ketosis for a while, all the tissues and organs get really good at using ketone bodies for fuel instead of glucose. The only cells that really can't use ketones are the red blood cells so the circulating glucose takes care of them. Even the brain does fine on just ketones.

Your Brain On Ketones | Psychology Today

Since the red blood cells really need that glucose, that's what most of it gets used for. There is very little left to get taken out to the tissues where the tumors hide.

I'm not sure how well the ketosis Rx would work for leukemia. Interesting thought. Research for tomorrow.

                        This.

Your cells can get energy from your mitochondria (via krebs/ATP), or from glucose fermentation. In cancerous cells the mitochondrial process has broken down, so they can ONLY get energy from glucose fermentation. If you starve the cells of glucose, then the healthy cells will still get energy from their working mitochondria, while the diseased cancerous cells will be shit out of luck and be outcompeted by your healthy cells.

Actually got a little chill reading this; I'm sorry for your housemate and for you. You've gotten excellent advice here and maybe the saving grace is that you cook 1/3 of her food -- she very well may still make the connection btw how she feels after she eats CW and when she eats your food.

Good and bad news about my housemate. She had hoped to just have a lumpectomy, which she did. And there was zero evidence of the cancer spreading to lymph nodes. But, the surgeon also removed some tissue that she thought was scar tissue from an earlier, non-cancerous lump. Unfortunately, it turned out to be pre-cancerous cells from a different kind of cancer. Because the surgeon thought the tissue was scar tissue, she didn't remove enough

The surgeon could go back in and remove more, but HM decided to have a mastectomy, which has been scheduled. That means no radiation, which is good. But they are doing genetic analysis to see if HM is high risk for more breast cancer. If she is, they are talking chemo. I think that is crazy. She will only have one breast, and there is no indication of cancer in it.

HM is, rightly, terrified of chemo. So she has agreed to do a low carb Primal (mostly Paleo) diet. She is still very afraid of animal fats, so won't do those. But she is fine with a moderate amount of coconut oil and other non-animal fat. I also feed her stuff that is supposed to be good at preventing cancer.

Tell her my story.... 10 years ago I was hospitalized with a liver infection. I got meds that made my blood cloth, they pushed litres of fluids in me, kept me on bedrest for a week and pushed me full with antibiotics. after a week I wasn't better but I was too healthy to stay so they send me home as cured... 4 days later I was rushed to the hospital again and they found out my heart was failing due to an infection on the muscle.
It was so bad that all my organs were shutting down... that was really the cause of my liver problems the week before but they never found out what the real problems were.
The doctors there just went with the obvious and because it was christmas they didn't take the time to look good. In that first week they did everything that was wrong for my ailing heart. They almost killed me with it...
I learned the hard way, doctors don't know everything....

Get your friend to get as physically fit as she can be. Primal diet or not, fill her up with veggies and fruits, she'll need her fitness as she goes through chemical therapy. It will be torture for her body and she needs to do everything she can to support it. That's most important now... even if she still wants to eat the carbs...
                              My story, My thought....

It's all about trying to stay healthy!!!!
