  • Simulfactotem - doing many things at once

Today I was cycling through the park drinking a coffee, and it struck me how totally content it was making me to do three things I love at the same time: cycle, look at beautiful scenery, and drink coffee

Other simulfactotems I enjoy are: listening to audio books whilst doing yoga, cooking and listening to music, talking on the phone whilst doing housework.

Does anyone else get a noticeable high out of doing several things you enjoy at the same time? If so, what are they?

This would emphasize high protein, low unsaturated fats, low iron, and high antioxidant consumption, with a moderate or low starch consumption.

In practice, this means that a major part of the diet should be milk, cheese, eggs, shellfish, fruits and coconut oil, with vitamin E and salt as the safest supplements."

Running, listening to music and watching sports on tv. I really like multitasking. It's even better when all of the activities are pleasureable. Which also reminds me of......
I often find myself doing few things simultaneously and sometimes experience an overwhelming desire to do so even though it's practically impossible. Example - doing the dishes and fold laundry. Yeah, I need to go out more

For me it is the exact opposite. Your examples sound ok (coffee plus bike riding sounds somewhat awkward though) but I think in general, people try to do too much (unimportant) stuff. Everywhere you go you see people multitasking. Texting and eating while driving. Watching a movie on a phone while running. Reading a book while walking down stairs. Watching youtube videos while watching TV. Messing around with cell phones while eating with friends and family. Talking on the phone while pooping. Writing on MDA while working (guilty). I've seen all of these things and worse.

I think there is something to be said for single-tasking. Do less, focus more. I'd rather do one thing well then do four things somewhat sufficiently. Just like eating primally, less and better is preferable over more and worse.

I think giving the brain some time without multiple sources of stimulus overwhelming it gives you time to actually think, which is probably why most people do everything they can to avoid this freedom from distraction.

I think that's the problem - most people don't like what's going on in their head (their own thoughts), so they try to drown them out. Most people's minds are pretty crazy and neurotic.

I generally give myself too much space to think, so it's nice to have moments of escape where I'm just doing.

Oh, and cycling with a coffee is very doable in a park... it got a bit trickier when I moved onto the canal

Exactly, and it is easier for them to avoid or ignore the problem than to face it. Just like it is easier for them to distract themselves from their obesity and health problems with another piece of cake and another bucket of high fructose corn syrup.

I think I will continue drinking my bulletproof coffee in the morning while standing or sitting for now.

It's funny but my parrot is super happy when she has TWO of something. Either two toys, one she's holding and the other she's holding and chewing, or two things to eat, one she's holding and the other she's holding and eating. You can tell she's extra happy because she will switch back and forth between the two things and sort of walk back and forth on her stand looking all satisfied with herself and sort of doing this breathing thing with her tongue. Extra bonus happiness if at least one of those items was stolen.

Anyway, I like to read the newspaper (yeah, a real paper) and drink coffee while people-watching at my favorite outdoor coffee place. I save up the papers we get Thursday - Sunday and on Saturday I read Thursday and Friday and on Sunday I read Saturday and Sunday.

For things like a morning walk or cooking, I like to do just the thing. Especially walking - for me, there are far too many people driving cars who think they're capable of multitasking for me to rely on them not to run me over. For housework, which I really don't like, music or tv in the background. As far as multitasking, I do like having a cup of coffee in the morning while I start my daily to-do list/meal plan. It gives me a sense of order (no matter how false that might be).

Smoking a cigarette, snorting cocaine, and having meaningful conversations with the high priced escort I hired

Yes, they are all possible at the same time, unlike sneezing and urinating

But, serious response, I like adding music and smoking to any activity, favorite lately has been reading and writing.

I mostly like to do one thing at time. The only thing that comes to mind is I like to listen to audiobooks while needle felting, oh and I like listening to music when I cook.

If you live long enough, that may just happen spontaneously.

your nature ride with coffee sounds lovely and I think it's great to feel overwhelmed with gratitude for one's many blessings. However, on the whole I would vote for one thing at a time. I don't even like background music much, but leave the house quiet when I am home alone.

Except perhaps walking and talking Had a beautiful walk with my dd yesterday and we talked almost the whole way. Then we sat on a log and watched the waves and birds etc without talking. Very very nice.

Definitely not, except in some cases listening to music while doing something else. I don't consider drinking coffee or tea while watching a video or on the internet as multitasking.

One thing at a time allows me to 'go into it' which is very pleasurable to me.

I know that when I put a call into my mother once a week that I'll be on
there no less than 90 minutes, so I make sure my kitchen is NICE AND DIRTY
(which is always, ahem) before I call her.

She's 70, so the Usual Topics are: Weather, Illness (other people's), Neighbors,
Books and Movies. Every.Single.Time. Sometimes some small anecdotes about her
childhood. The.Same.Ones.Every.Time. Not MY childhood... but hers... I'm pretty
sure mine never existed. I think I was born and adult... but anyway, not bitter.

Moving on - SO! When I'm done having her talk at me for the 90 minutes, my kitchen
is sparkly clean and I have NO IDEA who did it!

I usually blame it on the cat when my husband gets home.

"Look honey! The cat cleaned the kitchen again!"

and he usually replies "oh, nice, how long were you on the phone with
                              your mother -this- time?"

What? What are you talking about? IT WAS THE CAT.

Anyway, so that's what I like to do when I'm on the phone with my mother.... otherwise,
if I have nothing to clean or no laundry to put away.. I would usually put away a bottle of
                              wine instead.

                              Cleaning for the win. Snort.

Curiously, my mother hates it when I'm cleaning whilst talking to her; "honey, what
are you doing?" She wants my undivided attention to her superfluous rhetoric. So I have
to remind her "hey, either you listen to me clean, while my two kids are out playing, or
you have to get interrupted 500 times while they're IN the house, because when you pick
up the phone to answer it, or call someone, your 8yo and 11yo become helpless infants that
can't do shit for themselves and neeeeeeeeeeeeed something about every five seconds.

                              She ultimately chose the cleaning.....
