  • Thought Experiment: keep Paleo a secret?

    I want to start a discussion about were you would like or imagine the Paleo movement going. I intentionally don't want to take sides because I don't want to influence the responses. Which scenario would you prefer or foresee and why?:

    Scenario #1:
    The Paleo nutritional and fitness guidelines are adapted into the mainstream. The USDA changes its dietary guidelines and, presumably, apologizes for all the sickness and death they caused. People eat as healthfully as they can given the new economic realities which will be created. Physical and mental health is at an all time high.

    Scenario #2:
    Paleo becomes the next Mediterranean/Atkins/pick your popular but generally-considered fad diet. The die-hards stick with it and continue to enjoy the great results the lifestyle affords us. The rest of the population continues to get fatter, dumber, and sicker according to current trends. For those of us who follow this lifestyle, we will find untold competitive advantages especially professionally and socially as our focus can be placed towards developing ourselves professionally and/or socially instead of dealing with the symptoms of a SAD diet.

    What are the key issues here?
    Which scenario is more likely?
    Paleo friends, go!

    You're dreaming if you think most people will give up convenience foods.

    Of course option #1 is preferable, but it's extremely unlikely. If it happened though, I would expect economies of scale would drive the prices of our 'fringe' foods down.
    Disclaimer: I eat 'meat and vegetables' ala Primal, although I don't agree with the carb curve. I like Perfect Health Diet and WAPF Lactofermentation a lot.

      I enjoy the current kind-of balance. While it is gaining some popularity, at least it is making it easier for farms to make money off of doing things right. However, it isn't big enough to get uberly taxed/regulated by the government....yet.

        I would much prefer my loved ones who think I'm nuts to be healthy and happy, so Option 1
        Four years Primal with influences from Jaminet & Shanahan and a focus on being anti-inflammatory. Using Primal to treat CVD and prevent stents from blocking free of drugs.

        Eat creatures nose-to-tail (animal, fowl, fish, crustacea, molluscs), a large variety of vegetables (raw, cooked and fermented, including safe starches), dairy (cheese & yoghurt), occasional fruit, cocoa, turmeric & red wine

            Beat me too it. I just can't see eating real food that you actally cook, rather than just 'make hot and brown' ever going mainstream, not when there is a take-out place on every corner, hell I have at least 4 chippies, 2 chinese, 2 indian, 2 pizza places within a 10 minute walk.
            You know all those pictures of Adam and Eve where they have belly button? Think about it..................... take as long as you need........................

              If you look at the trend in grocery stores over the past few years, not only are there prepared foods in the freezer section, but almost all of them have jumped on the rotisserie chicken bandwagon, and at the WFoods near me, they rotate the prepared salads, sides, and entrees so often, I'm guessing you could eat a store cooked meal every day and not get bored. Fortunately, they list the ingredients, so I'm rarely tempted. (I kinda miss those lemon feta fritters. *sigh*)

              Those big chains spend a ton on demographic/trend studies, so I'm thinking that not a whole lot of people are going back to the days when eating out or serving tv dinners (the olden days version of convenience foods) was an occasional thing.

              I also live just a three block walk from a street that has restaurants from pizza to Asian to tapas for miles.

                I'd prefer the "stealth paleo" version of this. The USDA and all the other official orgs plus all the food companies would just f-ck paleo up. It might be nice if doctors were more into it, though.

                    Stealth paleo suits me fine - if it became something that was promoted by the government, I'm sure they would start morphing foods we think are healthy to cut costs. But . . . Keeping it a stealth option while the rest of the world gets sicker and fatter isn't a great thing either. Instead of the natural die-off that should happen, the medical industry has billions invested in treating the people with preventable diseases, right down to last minute, futile yet obnoxiously expensive, life saving measures. Guess who gets stuck with the bill? I shudder to think of what it's going to look like here in another 20 years.

                    If society wasn't so hell-bent on thwarting Darwin with pills, medical technology and cosmetic surgeries, I'd say fuck it and keep it to ourselves. The cost of carrying the rest of society seems too high.

                      Sounded just a wee bit biased to me. I for one would love to see paleo/primal take hold in the mainstream. Even if they don't get it right it still has to be better than what we have now. It would be great to see the availability go up and the cost go down of primal foods.

                          It would be great to see the huge public subsidies that go to big Ag and big pharma redirected to producing real healthy food. We need the pastured pork lobby and the cross fit lobby and the grass-fed lobby to man up and kick some ass in DC, really flex their muscles. OTH, collapse of the system as we know if seems more likely than that scenario

                            Economies of scale relate to how the cost of producing something goes down as the ability to produce more of those items go up. So, theoretically, the more animals that were raised in a healthful manner, the less it would cost to produce each one, so more would be produced, etc., until the consumer saw a price reduction.

                            Eg: the amount of computer you can buy today for about $350 would have probably cost you $1500 in 1990.

                            I'm not sure how long it would take for the price to actually go down, but if subsidies went to sustainable farming practices, and got taken away from CAFO producers, the difference in prices between the two would certainly decrease.

                            So a person today that thinks, "I'm not paying twice as much for grass fed," if the prices got closer, might think that a 50% price difference wasn't so bad. And so on.

                              If the producers are able to sell more product they can lower the price per and still make a profit through quantity sold.
