This is a scary fact for New York Presbyterian Hospital patients, since is he greeting them on the hospital website/access to records, apparently as "the best and the brightest" ... physician.

Someone's head can be turned by money or fame or whatever. That wouldn't take away his ability to do surgery. As long as he keeps his hands in so to speak, there is no reason why his tv show should diminish the talent or ability that got him the gig in the first place. Snake oil by day, surgeon by night.

I was unawares he was a surgeon. Truth be told, while I put no stock in him he still has a higher regard with me than those second-wave new age healers that seem to be gaining in popularity lately.

I have respect for Dr. Oz in that he is a practicing heart surgeon and performs surgeries one day a week. He's obviously no dummy.

But his show has to be taken with a "caveat emptor" attitude. Some of his stuff is great. Some of it is malarkey that he should be ashamed to promote. But I guess any time you get involved with a tv show that tries to turn a serious subject into entertainment for the masses, you're going to end up selling out. I do think he has sold out. It doesn't mean he's not a good doctor, and it doesn't mean some of the information in his show isn't golden. But it has to be viewed with a very discerning eye and you better do your own research.

I have seen similar quotes about his surgical skills, but how do you know this to be actually true?
He might just be good, or average, or possibly even a marginal surgeon (who knows and how do they know?).

What data is there to compare his skills to other surgeons that don't have TV shows and PR teams behind them?

            Example:
I might think my neighbor a professional pilot is excellent at his/her job (at least it appears so - I haven't heard of any incidents he caused and he has worked for years), but I'm not a pilot to know his levels of skills, and even if I was a pilot, if I'm not working closely with my neighbor the pilot, how do I know if he is excellent or average or what ever?

OZ: As far as exceptional and excellent - he's doing quite well in show business (I see the evidence for that )

Of course, what we do know about him is totally unattractive: a dishonest showman. So suddenly on this one day he becomes a paragon of decency. We have no idea how he reached the position he has at Columbia: smiled a lot? slept around? kissed important a-sses? Forgive me for being cynical, but I firmly believe that although chances that one achieves a high position in the present day American medicine just because of brain and skills exist, they are rather small.

I'm surprised that people aren't able to separate Dr. Oz the showman from Dr. Oz the doctor.

This is his bio at Columbia: Mehmet C. Oz, MD, FACS - Department of Surgery

It's worth a look. I think it's pretty clear he's got the creds as a doctor.

OK, I took a look. I mean I glanced and I saw ... the MBA, so I returned here and decided to ask you some questions:
-do you think I'll see information there about unnecessary surgeries (he might perform)
-do you think I'll see information about his possible decisions to attach dying elderly patients to a machine so they are tortured to death, because it's soooo good for the hospital's (and his) finances, etc.

                    I find myself speechless.

In my opinion, I would rather have a full-time surgeon than a very part-time one.

Of course. A very important point.

Hey- Your snarkiness is neither necessary nor appreciated. I've made no attacks on you. We disagree on whether Dr. Oz is a credible doctor- big deal. Move on.

                              No, exactly true.
"I'm surprised that people aren't able to separate Dr. Oz the showman from Dr. Oz the doctor." This seems to be pretty aggressive.
I would like to repeat what we all know - he's showman. He is also a surgeon, but we don't know any details. BTW, NYPH happens to be my hospital and a place where I spent a lot of time with relatives a decade ago or so. No, I didn't encounter him, but the examples I gave are real. Yes, I know this hospital is just like any other hospital.
Just yesterday, a friend who a has a serious health problem told me that her doctor, also a surgeon (in a different field and ... somewhere) was complaining that he is constantly pressured to perform surgeries he thinks are not only unnecessary, but also dangerous. He says he resists the pressure. He is an authority in his field, but he isn't a TV star. Yes, he was handsome when younger.

That was a general statement, not directed at anyone specifically but rather at the 5 pages of comments. And I'm not sure- short of not commenting at all- how I could have expressed myself more politely. I didn't direct my comment at anyone, I didn't call anyone names, I didn't use any bad language, and I didn't utilize sarcasm. Apparently it's just the fact that my POV disagreed with yours? Who knows. I suggest since you find me so abrasive that you put me on ignore and then we won't have any misunderstandings.
