  • Sunglasses and Eye Health

You know how we are encouraged to wear sunglasses to protect our eyes against the onset of cataracts? What did Grok do? Would not our eyes have evolved to handle the amount of sun one is exposed to in a normal day (seasons and location taken into account) without any major risk? Or is that wishful thinking?

I wear sunglasses most of the time when I'm out in the sun. Keep in mind that we are more likely to live into our '80s or '90s than Grok. You're going to want your eyes when you're 90.

Well I think Groks eyes in Africa would have been dark. Light colored eyes are an adaptation to northern climates to let in more light. The problem comes when you have a blue eyed person in a very sunny place like Australia where they have the ozone hole right over them.

Cultures which evolved in very sunny areas also developed early forms of eye protection. Some of the older Arab women in the UAE still wear a version of these - a sort of leather mask covering the eye area (with holes to see through) which is coloured gold on the outside (to reflect the light) and coated on the inside with a kind of powder that protects the delicate skin around their eyes.

Without selective pressure, blindness in old age becomes an acceptable event.

Isn't the most practical reason to prevent wrinkles? Grok probably didn't care about that, but squinting your eyes to protect them from the sun all day can't be good for crows feet and wrinkles.

I hate sunglasses, but mostly because I have also been wearing glasses for the last 10 years. I guess my next pair will have to be those transition lenses.
