Does anyone else feel frustrated/annoyed when reading success stories?

    No, because I'm right where I want to be in terms of weight. I understand your frustration regarding the muffin top though, abdominal fat is a pain in the ass to lose.

      Totally agree. I was just playing around "ranting". I was not overweight when I started this. I just want to kind of lean out more. I'm sure I probably need to lift more heavy things. I just wish it would happen faster is all. I actually like the success stories, it's just that it seems like it was magic for all those people. I want it to be magic for me too.
      Breathe. Move forward.

        I don't mind them. I feel like I am a success, even though I do still have belly flab. As a woman in general and a mom in particular I see it as NORMAL to have belly flab. I can assure you my kids would prefer to snuggle my remaining pooch instead of a rock hard six-pack when they are sick or hurt. I am not fat by any means but I am simply soft. It doesn't deter from the strength of the muscle beneath, it just rounds out my figure. I guess I have just come to grips that I will never look like a fitness model, but that was never my goal. I won't say I never had times where I was disgusted that the last bit of jiggle never went away. I have just chosen to love my form instead of wish it was like someone else's. Ironically I drop weight easier and and quicker with that kind of attitude. I see it more about nurturing what I have instead of trying to lose. Eating like crap and not exercising simply isn't nurturing.

          I can't always find the time to read MDA, but I will find a way to see Friday's post. Twenty years ago I started having loads of health problems, along with the typical stubborn extra pounds. I ended up eliminating all grains (except for rice), ALL processed foods, all meat (except for fish) and dairy (gluten/dairy/preservative sensitive). I lost those stubborn pound quickly. I eventually brought beef back into my diet at the advice of my doc. (b/c of low iron) Years later, the market for gluten/dairy foods came about and I started adding these back in with a frenzy. YEA sandwiches and pizza again! BOO, pounds coming back on. Back to no grains, no fake foods. Along comes MDA and I read about all the meat eating. Yum, more meats. Damn, more pounds back on. So, I have found that I can not eat as much meat as people on here seem to eat. My point is, you will have to tweak your diet to satisfy your body. That will take a lot of effort on your part. Keep a food diary for starters.
          I learned a valuable lesson with the first steer I sent to slaughter. I should have named him Hamburger and not Snookers.

            Maybe this makes you feel better:

            I started eating paleo / primal about 2 years ago as a way to stay healthy, and not need to go on immune-suppressing drugs (I'm diagnosed with MS). I'd already cut out gluten and dairy about 4 years earlier.

            Since switching to primal, I developed a whole slew of new problems that were caused by this new, 'healthy' diet:
            -extreme, debilitating fatigue
            -feeling cold all the time
            -low blood pressure
            -hair falling out by handfuls with every shower
            -depression, mood instability, anxiety attacks
            -reduced quality of sleep
            -the worst IBS flares in the 6 years of my IBS career.

            The healthier I ate, the sicker I got. Oh yeah, and switching from low-fat paleo to high-fat primal also caused me to gain a bunch of extra fat that I totally didn't need.

            I've learned that there is no one way of eating that solves everyone's health issues. I've managed to cure most of the health problems that eating primal caused by switching my diet to high carb/low fat and doing some other things. I wish it was as easy for me as it seems to be for all those people with their happy success stories, but I have to keep remembering that I am a different person with different issues and needs, and one size does not fit all.

              I almost never enjoy success stories, I'm not sure why.... so here's my strategy: I don't read them. sounds simple, no? But, I'll admit it's not always easy to just NOT click or hit "delete."
              I guess curiosity killed the cat?

              also re: the muffin top, that's improperly fitting pants, plain and simple. I have always had the HARDEST time finding clothes that fit my body, pants specifically, so I know how many different shapes/cuts there are that are all labeled the same "size."
              Find a brand/style that is cut for your shape - for ME, that means keywords like "roomier through hips and thighs" or "relaxed fit" and/or "sits just below natural waist" - if I get lower-rise jeans in the same size/cut, that will result in a muffin-top.

              *shrug*... hope that helps.

                  That number inside clothing is not an indication of anything except a way to locate a possible fit on the rack.

                    I've never read any of your other posts, but what is your goal in Primal? Is it only just to lose weight? Because if it is, I think you're going about it all wrong...

                      Why shouldn't it be a goal? I understand that it's not the most noble of goals, but aesthetics matter, and weight loss is as good of a goal as any. It's a shallow world, and I bet most of the people here join to lose weight, improved health is a side effect.

                        I really like the success stories. I find them inspirational, that this way of living can lead to a healthier life. I don't apply them much to myself as I don't have a lot of weight to lose or suffer from terrible health problems (knock on wood). I just like the stories because they're happy.

                          Hi, serenity. As someone who was once in your frustrated and POed shoes and then went on to become one of Marks Friday Success Story posts, I can see both sides of this.

                          The key for me was the wake up call that Primal is not magic, never was. You still have to get off your bum and do the work.

                          Primal does make it easier to do that work. Cleaning all the processed gunk out of your diet makes everything function better and allows your body to start healing itself from whatever ails you be it thyroid problems, metabolic dysfunction, etc.
                          Also going low(ER) carb allows you to cut back on calories while not having blood sugar roller coaster rides and white knuckled hunger pangs. (Even those folks who include spuds and such in their primal fare are still way lower carb than the pasta and garlic bread with a cola and dessert SAD.)

                          But you still have to cut the calories overall. For some people it seems like magic because they just aren't as hungry on Primal so they spontaneously reduce their caloric intake. Lucky ducks! Other of us actually have to be more proactive and do the counting.

                            If losing weight, preferrably fat is your goal then I totally agree with Paleobird on this one, you have to maintain a calorie deficit. It is easier when eating primal, but it is critical that you focus on this to ensure fat loss success. Also I am a big believer in Intermittent Fasting, if you haven't done this yet give it a try, it jumped started my fat loss after a sticking point. However, we are all different and you will just have to keep experimenting to see what works best for your body. The great thing about success stories is that most of them have had to overcome significant obstacles and I find that highly motivating.

                              The first 5kg melted off me... errm and then the melting stopped and the 15kg I still need to lose stubbornly remained!! So yeah, I'm still working at it, recommitting and taking one day at a time!

                                Serenity, I can appreciate your pain. Its taken me about five years to do what some people manage in three months. Its not that I was doing something wrong, but that I had to do some additional things to make the weight loss happen. Just going primal didn't stop the cravings. Neither does the weight come off in a regular fashion. Sometimes it just drops off. Sometimes it just stops and I have to work hard just to maintain my current weight. As someone with additional health problems I have to recognise that going primal is just one aspect of things.

                                I'm happy to share more if you want to talk but I do know that just venting can sometimes be useful. So vent away! And don't worry about those who sound holier than thou because they have managed to make it work for them.
