  • Fudge Rounds and Star Crunches

I just remembered that when I was a kid, I had this schedule where right after getting off the school bus, I would ride my bike 1/4 mile down the road to my hometown's little country store and I would buy, for a quarter, a Fudge Round or a Star Crunch, and eat it on the ride back home. Every single day. Like most kids I rode my bike a ton every day so that probably negated the calories, but I just sorta cringe now thinking of the nasty junk I was putting into my little body. Poor past me. At least I have the rest of my life to reverse the bad pseudofood that used to go into my cells!

Yeah, my mom and I would walk to the dollar store and buy the same stuff, the oatmeal creme pies and similar. I was still eating those until I found about people food just a few years ago!

I was a swiss roll kind of girl, myself. and we used to ride down a pretty busy highway to a gas station to buy candy. Our parents had no idea.
It's just another day in paradise
As you stumble to your bed
        You'd give anything to silence
Those voices ringing in your head
You thought you could find happiness
        Just over that green hill
You thought you would be satisfied
        But you never will-

Swiss Rolls... The food of my teenage years... I forgot about those too! At the commissary on my Army post where I grocery shop, the entire wall next to the self checkout lanes is covered with all these nasty foods, Swiss rolls, star crunches, the whole shebang. It actually grosses me out now seeing the packages.

Yep oatmeal cream pies... my mom did not like me eating them at all really, but I would ride my bike down to the store and buy them also. Gross. I am pretty sure I would literally throw up if I ate one now!

Actually, they changed the ingredients one year when HFCS hit the market. That's when the oatmeal creme pies became insufferably soggy and nowhere as delicious, but just as addictive!

This thread has reminded me of a tribute video by EPIC MEALTIME... featuring "Marshmallow Stars"
                I think it's appropriate.
(Warning: while I can watch most of this video agape... I cannot watch the end, where they eat the thing, without getting slightly ill. That's my public service announcement...)

And that's why I'm here eating HFLC Primal/Paleo.

I ate oatmeal creme pies with my lunch every school day. I loved those damn things. I tried one a year ago and spat it back out. TOO SWEET.

Vanilla fudge ice cream with hot fudge, malt powder, and whipped cream - an almost daily occurrence after school. We called them Dusty Sundaes.

When my dad was little his parents only let him have one cookie at a time and he decided when he grew up and had a family everyone could have as many cookies as they wanted. So, it was normal for us to have fresh baked cookies several times a week.

We just moved near the hometown of McKee Foods, I've never seen so many Little Debbie "snack cakes" in my life! There are outlet stores with people loading up carts full of near-expired cakes. I have to admit, during a cheat/fail weekend, I bought some Swiss Cake Rolls just to see if they were what I remembered...EWWWW. Never, ever again. I used to think that the weird smell was lard, but it's more of a plasticky, waxy kind of smell/taste. I won't even go into what it did to my guts...

That was epic. My pregnant self thoroughly enjoyed that (but then again I like watching Man Vs Food when I'm not pregnant). I started laughing at the end when they showed it was 73,500 cals. A dark, secret part of me wants a bite...

Oooh man, fudge rounds. God damn I loved me some LD fudge rounds when I was a kid. I could never get past the bizarre "sticky" stuff in star crunches though. Hostess fruit pies where my all time favorite. Those were high dollar items and rarely seen in the lunch bag.

My Mom got a full-time job when I was 17, she felt so guilty that I had to come home from school to an empty house that she made sure the cabinet was always stocked full of Ding Dongs cause they were my favorites. Awwwww, Motherly love
