  • You got it Seas. How to put it in clean and acceptable language? The newsletter is distrubuted widely throughout NZ in all of our villages (around 900 residents) and their families and caregivers will often read this as well. So for this particular topic I'm trying to target those caregivers mostly, many of our residents care for a spouse who requires more specialised care, and also the residents themselves who might be feeling lonely or depressed and perhaps need to focus on their intimate relationships. I've already popped a bit in there about children and pets who are so good at those spontaneous moments of affection and intimacy that are such a delight. How to write it so that I'm not suggesting kiddy fiddling is a whole other skill though.

    • Reframe it as tactile touch rather than intimacy? Holding hands, hugs, stroking a pet, visiting the hairdresser...
I like badgers, books and booze, more or less in that order.

Can't avoid the sex topic though, as its something we feel needs to be acknowledged. Along with all those other aspects of tactile and emotional intimacy which often become much more important when their physical health has declined.

Oh, absolutely. Need to think about hip replacement-friendly positions etc. Lots of concerns/complications.

            • i feel for you LL as it would be a hard thing to write about given the target audience regardless of what age group you are talking about having sex. i am sure i saw something on either stuff or msn news the other day about sex getting better after 60. i didnt read it. it's prob like anything, it can get better with age if you pay attention LOL circumcision apparently effects men as they age too but you prob dont want to go there either! and then there is always safe sex. i did see something else about how the over 50s are spreading the diseases as they arent practising safe sex.

              • I'm hoping safe sex will be a whole other topic, well after I've safely left my job with luck! Its good though, I actaully do enjoy writing these things and researching them too. Its amazing the information I've unearthed looking through the variety of topics I've done in the last year. Best of all I'm hoping to achieve my gold medal for customer service with this last lot of articles, it would be nice to leave on that high note.

Be good. And if you can't be good, be careful.

                        • It's not surprising that the over 50 or 60 group doesn't practice safe sex. In my 20s and 30s if a man tried to use that line about "I just can't feel anything with a condom on," I'd laugh because after all, men in that age group get erections at the drop of a bra strap.

Fast forward 20 or 30 years, and I have more empathy with that statement. The good news is that men in that age group often have regular doctor visits and so can request blood tests if a woman stands her ground.

OTOH, rampant sex in the old retirement home makes my brain hurt. Truly.

                            • LOL. Really, because women live forever, and apparently kill off their spouses, men have it good in retirement. They are often outnumbered a good 3:1 at "Serenity Village."
