You like our US bikes? They make them in China you know.

The British have all kinds of good stuff. Christmas pudding comes to mind. And the Beatles. And Hogwarts. Okay, maybe that doesn't exist but it's so easy to think England is full of places like that.

I'm an American, I've lived in London for the last decade - and lots of people are so full of it. There's a lot of people in the UK who love America, I mean REALLY love America. On the flip-side, others hate it - and that's fine. Do you.

But seriously, blaming the US & big corporations or big pharma for problems in YOUR country is ludicrous.
Americans don't blame the Japanese for the invention of HFCS & MSG. Most of the modern day formulas that have been deemed bad, were once 'good'. The 'people' wanted a certain thing, corporations found they could give the customer a certain thing and steer a profit. Did they know it would lead to this? Probably not, only in hindsight can we be regretful. So many believe the government is 'out to get us' - do you watch CNN? Have you met people who work in the government or big corporations, trust me, they're not 'that' smart. Lest us not forget that Ancel Keys revised his stance. To think this is some master-plan to derail all in existence is umm... special. (Not that it wont :P)

China, India, Morocco - these nations didn't adopt American foods, and they're either doing just fine or they f****d it up for themselves. What's the basis for blame here? America makes foods so damn tasty that we can't resist? I appreciate folks at Whole 9 and across the paleo-adhering spectrum like to peddle the fact that these foods are 'designed' to make you want them. Yes, they are - but we are the commanders of our own destiny. Now that we know, stop wallowing in the depression feeds fat cycle - and make a change.

There's nothing to blame but our own ignorance. America didn't give the UK fish, chips & pies. They didn't give Germans beer, they didn't give Belgians chocolate - everything you love is a hodgepodge of history and borders, and it did not live and die with America. Americans market better than anybody (except the Brazilians - wow), but if you see an advert for an 'Oreo' Domino's pizza and think 'that looks delicious' - you're a moron, and even if you think it looks delicious, your reptilian thirst for survival bell should be ringing loudly over any 'food porn'.

*I'm not excusing the s*itty things that big corps do. Placing HFCS in baby food is inexcusable, mothers have enough to deal with than having to check whether or not their baby's food will harm them. My argument is not over that. It's for unproductive blame - because all it does is get everybody - nowhere. No matter where it takes place: office, sports, nutrition etc. it's not helpful.

Hey dude, I'm not blaming America, if you wind your neck in a bit you might realise pretty much everything I say is somewhat tounge in cheek. I actually blame both the system as a whole as it does not benifit the majority, rather the few with power snd money, the govenments, who are corupt and work for the intrest of the 'economy', which ulimately means the rich and powerful not the poeople with little but their TV's and cars and fake designer gear all on credit that keeps them poor, who voted for what they thought they needed. I also blame most of the public who are too stupid to think for themselves and follow along like sheep, they fed themselves maccy d's, and sugar coated cereal coz they were told to, and while some of them are too thick to think for themselves, plenty just don't bother as they are interlectually lazy.

In a nut shell if the public weren't idots and woke up and took a good hard look at the world, govenments and big corps wouldn't be able to get away with what they do. If govenments and big corps had a shread of human decancy then they would't behave the way they do. It's a viscous cycle that serves the status quo and those that want their thinking done for them.

They make much in China, that's why they are cheap, but good enough quality There are plenty od niche US bike makers, I just can't think of any right now as I'm out of touch with the biking world atm, I can only think of Kona, but they are Canadian .

Also my stepson turns 11 next year, we have told him if he dosn't get a letter from hogwarts he has to leave home

I lived in Toronto for two years and went to school there and loved it. I came away with a liking for Jello instant chocolate pudding, Kraft Dinner macaroni cheese, apple and cinnamon Cheerios, Oreo cookies, Triscuits, Sealtest blueberry yogurt and creamed corn, (none of which I would classify as good food) as well as The Young and Restless and David Letterman.

Since then I have developed a love of all things CSI especially CSI Miami and True Blood phew Alexander Skarsgard is HAWT. American TV used to be crap eg Starsky and Hutch, The Brady Bunch, Banana Splits but now it's pretty awesome.

I don't like the WMD f-up and I don't want British soldiers dying in Afghanistan, for what exactly ? Not to protect the UK from opium, we grow pharmaceutical opium in Gloucestershire !

The American corporations are trying to make a buck and these days these huge companies are so global I don't think it's easy to pin a nationality on them in any case.

Brits didn't exactly cover ourselves with glory with the whole Empire thing, lest we forget.

BUT one thing about the US that really bugs me is GM food. 77% of the world's soya is evidently now ultimately controlled by companies like Monsanto. I think it's a good job Bill Gates has those seed banks, we may need them !

Anyway having completely digressed the presenter of The Men Who Made Us Fat is a whiner and the 2nd episode wandered off track into the fat is bad CW which annoyed me. But my sugar guru Dr Robert Lustig MD was in episode 1 and he's always cool

I finally watched all the episodes that I could find on Youtube. Slow internet connections over here made it a slow and tedious project. The part about the history of HFCS, artificial fats, etc, was pretty good. However, I thought the overall tone of the videos took away personal responsibility for individual choices.

While no doubt mistakes were made, or perhaps not mistakes but business decisions that they knew were bad and made them for profit, nobody was forced to eat junk, Super Size anything or eat fast-food. It was all decisions that people made, perhaps decisions based on bad information but still their decisions.

Knowledge is power and the keys to not getting fat have always been out there and the internet has greatly increased the capacity for people to access that knowledge.

The information as to the hazards of smoking are well known and have been known for decades, yet people still choose to smoke.

The information on how to be healthy have been out there also, but people have made the choice to eat junk instead of decent food.

And before someone jumps in with the medical CW thing, while I have great problems with what the medical establishment has become but I don't think that you could find one doctor that would tell a patient that fast-food was good for them. They might say to follow the revolting food pyramid but beyond saying a once a month treat or something, I don't think any medical professional would advise a patient to eat from fast-food places on a regular basis.

End of the day, it is all about personal choices.
