Being FAT is now illegal in Japan. - YouTube

Interesting, says the country is small, so they can't afford for the people to be big. Companies are serving healthier food (doesn't go into detail what that is) and encouraging workers to exercise more through the day (the youtube vid is HILARIOUS, music sounds like nap-time not workout time) because companies now face fines if their workers are over-weight.

I'm not sure if this is applied to all citizens, or just those employed.

I'm also assuming Sumo wrestlers are forgiven.
I used to seriously post here, now I prefer to troll.

33.5 inch waist for men over 40. damn.

i love the end of the video when they focus in on that one guy's mid-section as if to show how overweight he is, and he's thinner than i was in high school.

I know most of those people wouldn't even be considered chubby by our standards, but then again by their standards this nation is full of Sumo wrestlers without any athleticism. Yes offense.

This should be required reading for everyone who wonders "why are asians skinny when they eat a lot of rice"? It's because their society pressures them to be skinny.

Speaking as an asian person, I can guarantee that the pressure to be thin in asia is super super massive.

          Lol.
In all of the universe there is only one person with your exact charateristics. Just like there is only one person with everybody else's characteristics. Effectively, your uniqueness makes you pretty average.

It's also because they eat about 80% less sugar than Americans do and have a better connection to healthy culinary traditions. Even their junk foods are better - rice crackers flavored with shrimp are pretty darn tasty compared to doritos.

but shrimp crackers are better than either! So is cheap canned-tuna sushi rolls. Now I'm getting hungry...

To be fair, the average male height is 5'7.5" (171.5cm) in Japan. But if they're not scaling it, then that's a bit of a problem. US health guidelines also state that your waist should not exceed half your height.

35 inch waist on a tiny frame and short statue is totally doable. I'm 5'.9,5" and I'd feel pretty damn bloated with a 35 inch waist.
I never understood why men get fat, they run on testosterone ...

But I bet for women that had children and a slowed metabolism this must be really tough.

Testosterone works differently in the genders - women are much more sensitive to a little bit than men. We also drink more beer...
