  • My co-worker won't shut up!

OMG! I'm so tired of her talking I'm about to murder a carebear! Is there a nice way to tell someone to shut up? I just don't see how people can think someone enjoys listening to them for 45 mintues straight...without any input. She is the only person who can give me a headache. Anyway, shes still talking and I just felt like ranting....

Tell her politely but firmly that while you are sure what she is saying is very interesting you have work to finish. Then suggest she email you the news since you really do care (not) but you just do not have time to talk about it. Then you can read the email or not. Either way she is out of your face and you don't come across as a jerk.

Edit: The other option is to say something like..."Ha! That reminds me of that one time in Bangkok. I mean, who would of thought midgets charge the same price as regular hookers? I mean, isn't it wild!?" She will probably get uncomfortable and leave...to go to HR to file a complaint if nothing else but still...

Tell her "A very wise man once told me a cigarette burns much faster in the wind"

Then walk away looking at the puzzled look on their face as they try to figure out the meaning and how it is relivent to what they were saying.

        Cheers

I would just say "I don't have time for this." then turn around and get back to business. Her feelings may be hurt but I doubt you enjoy her company anyways so just tear the bandage off in one stroke, stop peeling it slowly. But then again I don't suffer windbags very well.

You wouldn't by any chance be frustrated about something and a little more susceptible to irritation that usual? Just asking.

Ooooh don't you hate someone who talks incessantly without a break in the conversation and they keep talking and talking and talking without so much as waiting for you to respond???

I can't stand that! I have a few friends who are like that (males AND females) and they do.NOT.shut.up. When all you are saying is "Umm Hummm. Umm. Humm. Yeah. Right. I know..." for an hour while they ramble, you know it's time to walk away.

Oh, and I have a mother who does that...she wonders why I don't call her more.

If I'm directly involved in the conversation - I just walk off and say "well, it's been fun, but gotta get back to it!".

If this were a chronic occurance and involved other co-workers - I'd document it for a week or two (just to be sure it's not my own irritation talking), and then if the amount of time spent yakking is truly excessive I'd take my concerns to my boss. However my boss is the direct kinda person who would both take my concerns seriously and handle it without making it a big issue out of what should be a minor problem. The problem would be handled with a short communication to said co-worker to stay on task and that would be the end of it. Not sure how your particular office works and if this would be an option for you.

Mine's always been "Hey, I'm on a really short deadline right now, I'll talk to you later." Then, when you keep using it and "later" never comes they either A) catch a clue or B ) figure you're always really bust and go bug someone else. Either way, it's a win-win situation.

I do that regardless and people will do anything, even tap me on the shoulder, to make sure I'm hearing their nattering. Doesn't tend to work with the kind of folks the OP is referring to.

yeah in that case I would have to say "Look, I am very busy right now, and need to concentrate on my work. I don't want to only give you half of my attention, so can you save your stories for our lunch break? Thanks!"
