  • I was just wondering if you ladies could help me on the issue of bloating. I bloat like crazy and usually at work which makes it even more uncomfortable (I work in a restaurant and I am on my feet for almost 8 hours every shift). I usually start the day with my standard breakfast of eggs, avocado, veggies/fruit and before work I will snack on some avocado or veggies or meat. I start work around 5 and by 7 or 8 I have a HUGE belly from being bloated. I haven't really been switching anything up too much and even try and avoid dairy aside from a little cream in my morning coffee - hours before work. Do you think this could be due to dehydration? Thanks for the help, I'm so frustrated and self conscious!!

    • If your eating brocolli or cauliflower that could be the cause. Skip the cream for a few days and see if that makes a difference. I started getting lactose intolerant at about 30 - thats a common age for it to start being a problem.

Have you had a chance to check out the FOODMAPS? Some vegetables and fruit cause problems. Mark had posted this link yesterday, i found it helpful:

        • I don't think anything Leida has said would lead me to believe that she would do anything radical like starve herself, take drugs or make herself puke just to achieve an "unrealistic" goal of body perfection.

People told me on my calorie counting thread that I clearly was suffering from body dysmorphic disorder just because I chose to pursue awesome and not settle for pretty good.

This is an individual choice and we should be supportive, not telling someone they need to "get help" just because we have different goals.
Thank you. A heartfelt thank you. And, yes, I consider coffee a drug, though I have a box of Jack 3D that I took a few times pre-workout during the last 2 years. I only puke when I have a stomach bug (4 times in the past 7 years), I managed a 24 hour fast once, and absolutely can't eat less than 1200 calories a day.

You're welcome. I think there is finger wagging on one extreme of, "Everybody has to look like a supermodel or be a worthless human being." But then there is the opposite extreme which is just as unhelpful of finger wagging and labeling any person who strives for perfection as "She must have an eating disorder".

I agree that years of extreme CW style diet yo-yoing can really whack a person's metabolism and cause adrenal problems, etc. But just because that can happen doesn't mean that is happening to you. On my calorie counting thread people kept telling me how I must be suffering from a "deranged" metabolism. Turns out there was a much simpler explanation. I was just eating too much.

            • More body dysmorphia (or maybe it's just shock at what's really there??) Sorry I keep going on about this. I saw myself walking in the mirror in the exercise room. Oh my god I have these huge bulging thigh muscles that bulge and ripple as I walk. It's almost horrifying. I look like a guy. I felt so embarrassed and self-conscious as I walked back to my office. I thought everybody must be staring and judging. I know they say that women won't bulk up, but apparently some of us do. I don't even do heavy weights. I must be full of testosterone. But how could I be if I hardly have any sex drive at all?

Could also be an egg intolerance. Try a couple weeks egg free to see if that helps.

Maybe your leg muscles aren't really getting so huge. Maybe the muscles are just getting more visible because you are shedding the fat that was around them. Have you measured them? Anyone who can hike the PCT has probably always had tree trunk legs. Now you are just peeling back the bark a bit so they show. I think legs like that are something to be proud of.

                  • SB, my soccer-playing niece has big calf muscles too. She is gorgeous. If anybody is stupid enough to judge you for something like that, you shouldn't care about their opinion anyway. No matter who you are, no matter what you do, somebody is judging you. Just make sure it is the idiots who have a low opinion of you.

Leida, you go ahead and aim for awesome. But appreciate where you are at too. Because it is still a wonderful place. A drive for higher standards doesn't have to come from a place of misery. And you are quite right to say that aiming for 10 is necessary to hit the 7 or 8. I myself will keep aiming for higher as long as the cost is reasonable for the reward. And in the meanwhile, I am profoundly grateful to have made it as far as I have. I no longer fear being a crippled, diabetic old lady, I no longer feel like people are looking at me with pity, I am no longer the fat person in the room. Well, not in most rooms anyway, LOL! And now, I have a black pencil skirt in my reward drawer that I'm only a couple of pounds away from being able to wear proudly. I am so looking forward to that. I haven't worn a pencil skirt in years.

When they talk about women not bulking up, they mean upper body. While they wax poetic about the fat on women's thighs, they do not mention that it is normal for women to have huge lower body strength and good muscular development. Female soccer players/runners quickly become quad dominant, same happens with ardent spinners unless they are born exomorphs, and most women, unlike men, never have problem of a skinny calf. Have you ever noticed how frigging obsessed men are with calf rises? Well, most women get a well turned out calf from cardio, for gods sake.

And it is again, thanks to childbirth prep. It takes one heck of the LB strength to get the baby out without med assist. So, your large quad is very feminine.

One thing for it: balance the hamstring and glute! Deadlifts and two-handed KB swings is just what the doc ordered, trust me on that! My quad is large (and exaggerated by the fat layer/budge), but one of my biggest achievements is that i finally have that sweep along the back of the leg that makes it even.

                          • Egads in my exercise classes all they ever do is glute stuff. It drives me crazy. It hurts so much. I get crazy sciatic nerve twitches going during those and then later my glutes are sore for days. They are sore today. It sure does help though. Things are more shapely back there. I don't have a weight room to use.

                            • My thighs are bulging....with fat. Lol. Can't wait until they are bulging with muscle and a more reasonable amount of fat! When I get close to that 100 pounds lost I hope to be fit, strong, and ready for a warrior dash, cellulite be damned!

                              • The good thing about the Warrior Dash is that cellulite is the last thing that you will be worried about once you get to it and for a day or so after. After I sprint, I feel amazing for about an hour, and then life becomes very, very, very challenging

OMG, I have THE SKIRT as well. It hangs in the closet... waiting. It is not a pencil one, it is a godet (? i dunno proper word in English, tight on tope, opening up on the bottom, 6 sections?) so we both are cheering upon the waistline. Or at least I hope the skirt wants to be worn, not to be send to the Thrift store....
