Judg, I love the Charlotte Bronte quote!

I've mostly lurked here. Not much to say, I guess. I am contemplating what to do today for exercise, as the temps are heading for the 90's. Something where I stay air conditioned I think. I don't like hot weather, and I'm not at all acclimated to it yet this year. Fortunately, it will be more seasonable in a few days (or so they say).

        • Jodis has it right, Tomi. With a three-hour time difference, it just amused me that you were spitting energy for your morning, and mine was pretty well over.

Thanks, Jodis, I like cycling through my favourite quotes in my signatures.

          • Sorry to bring up a gross subject but I could really use some help. Does anyone have a good home remedy for a case of the trots? This has been going on now for a week on and off and, in between mad dashes to the loo, I feel fine. No nausea involved but no appetite either. My dad and I eat together and I haven't eaten anything else outside the house and he isn't sick so I doubt this is food poisoning. I ate normally for the first few days thinking it would pass but then decided to give my digestive system some time off and did a 24 hour fast. That seemed to work but then last night I finally got hungry and ate and it started up all over agin with a vengeance. Urrrrgh.

ETA: I have never had IBS or other digestive problems and am at a healthy weight now.

            • Are you taking magnesium? That's a side effect.

Nope. I don't take any supplements at all.

This is what is weird. Nothing has changed, diet wise to cause this. I eat the same types of foods in roughly the same ratios and quantities. I drink the same tea. I haven't added or stopped any meds or supps. ?????

                • A week is a long time for your body to rid yourself of something. When I get a rare occurrence like this, I stick with plain full fat yogurt and drink black tea (tannins help) and bananas in the yogurt if it's tolerated.

A week is a long time, though. Hope it clears up soon.

                    • Paleobird -- hope you're feeling better soon! Take it from someone with chronic diarrhea - it really screws up life when you're running to the bathroom all the time!

Have you been anywhere where you may have picked up a bug in your food? Perhaps even from some organic veggies or at a cafe? You might need some meds if it doesn't clear up. Good luck.........

In the GAPS diet, Dr. McBride mentioned that she recommends high fat dairy for constipation, but low fat/high protein dairy for diarrhea - she said she didn't know, why but this combination seemed to help her patients. If you eat dairy, you could try some low-fat yogurt/dairy with some probiotics.

                            Hey Judg,

I just saw that you mentioned you're dealing with chronic fatigue. I am too, and after realizing that it's only gotten worse the better i eat, I decided to keep doing some more digging - i found this amazing paper on chronic fatigue syndrome that totally blew my mind - for the first time the whole thing made so much more sense. I'm in the process of trying out some of the supplements that were recommended (mainly amino acids) and I wanted to wait a while before posting anything about it so I could see if I had any improvement, but I'd like to share this with you (and anyone else)in case it's information you haven't come across yet. (And if you do know about it already, I'd love to know your take on it!)

                            • Thanks, BB, I'll check them out. Let me know how the supplements work for you. As you probably know, the cause(s) of CFS is/are still very hotly debated, but the more people in the scientific community poking around and trying to find it, the better. I am just trying to alleviate the symptoms for myself, and if it turns out that grains have been a major contributor to the problem, so much the better, in the sense that this is something that I can control.

I can't imagine how horrible that would be to have this on an ongoing basis.

The only thing I can think of is a couple of free samples at the farmer's market last weekend. That was Saturday and the problem started Sunday so the timing would be right.

This kind of reminds me of when I came back from Vanuatu with a case of giardia. Maybe it's some kind of parasite.
