But what happened with me is I went VLC (around 30 carbs a day) and that helped get cravings under control for a while and even out energy levels. Then I started exercising more regularly and eating more protein and fat just wasn't doing it for me. I felt my energy levels going down. Then I started eating more carbs like carrots and more tomatoes and I felt a lot better. This last month I think I went a little too far with my carb exploration by eating one too many fruit snacks and a cheat here and there. So now I'm back on VLC until I feel like I need to slowly add more carbs. Once I'm evened out, I think 50-60 carbs a day will do it. Overall, I'm depending on controlling my calorie count, not my carb count. Going on VLC helped me lose 30 pounds, but nuttin beyond that. I was even doing 15 carbs a day at one point and saw zero difference on the weight scale. Controlling carb intake is all about managing a healthy blood sugar level I think, because once you have that, you don't have erratic cravings or energy levels and that helps you stay in control.

      Same here. There's definitely a sweet spot, and that's what I'm looking for now.

      • Okay, this has me mystified. The scale hasn't moved but my clothes are definitely looser. But when I measure my waist it's unchanged.

        Another thing is I do try to manipulate my exercise. Mostly I've tried exercising less so as not to overtrain. I think it helped for a while, but I hate getting sore any time I do something extra strenuous and it feels like exercising less has led me to lose a little strength for my more strenuous activities. So I've decided to add running a couple times a week and now I'm sore all the time, even doing stuff I normally do.

        I give up trying to figure anything out.

          I'm the same - this indicates we are losing fat while gaining an equal amount of muscle by mass (as muscle is denser than fat).

          My waist has stayed the same while losing around the last 7-9 lbs. That's because I only started doing abs exercises from around that point, so I've gained muscle in that area. Prior to that I was seeing a steady loss of inches from my waist.

          It's frustrating not to have an independent measure to confirm progress, either way, apart from how well clothes fit.

            Hello ladies. I am fairly new to Primal Eating, though I did "Protein Power" about ten years ago. I was "dieting" then, not changing my lifestyle, and I got bored with it and fell off the wagon -- for ten years! I've been reading this thread since I started checking out this forum at the end of January. I'm 59, post-menopausal, and more than 100# overweight.

            Currently, my main goal is to get off my medications for high BP and ankle edema (probably insufficient vein valves, probably hereditary, but I think I can at least improve the situation), and avoid going on metformin (or even insulin eventually). Weight loss is a combo of side benefit and an actual health goal. I can't think of much else that will help the veins and subsequent ankle edema. Well, exercise, but sadly, instead of the use of calf muscles to help pump lymphedema out, my ankles seem to get a bit MORE swollen with exercise (or show no difference at best). At least that is the case now. It may improve/change as I progress further. I hope.

            That's just by way of background. I'm posting today about a phenomena that I've noticed before (since I started converting to this lifestyle in January). I need to see if it recurs more times before I'm willing to say that this is generally true (for me, anyway).

            I've had a couple of days where I've been extra-hungry; the food doesn't seem to "last" as long and I DO get hungry. I ate some primal snacks (no consistency of times or snacks over the two days and frankly, I can't remember it all right now), felt a bit discouraged, but soldiered on ... This morning I weighed myself and got a weight drop, instead of the usual steady or minor fluctuation in weight. It's not huge, just 1.5 lb., but I suddenly remembered that there had been other times when I felt especially hungry and then in a day or two, I'd drop some more weight.

            I know a lot of women lose weight in small plateaus interspersed with weight drops. What I am curious about is whether anyone else notices weight drops in a day or two after "hungry days"? And it is mostly just curiosity. I am trying to notice as much as I can going on with hunger, mood, etc.

            I had a raging (for me) case of jet-lag, having returned from Hawaii a week ago, and having more ankle edema (plane flights always have made my legs swell), but that seems to be passing, so perhaps this one can be attributed to "only" water loss. *shrug* I'm fine with that -- I have too much fluid in my ankles, so it can leave any old time now.

            • Hi. I hope you all don't mind me jumping in. I started Primal once last year and failed. I started again in January, lasted a few weeks, then failed. My biggest problem has been giving up sugar and coffee (coffee totally causes blood sugar issues). All the problems that primal initially helped, IBS and irritability, are now worse than ever since going back on SAD. I'm so ready for a change. I know Primal eating is so much better for me and my family but its so hard sometimes seeing people who look so healthy eating whatever they want. I know that that way of thinking isn't right. I'm going to work on overhauling my diet again. I so want to 'feel' good again and not be hungry 24-7.

              I look forward to getting to know you all. So many of you have been successful. I hope I'm able to learn from you.

              • Jodis - one possible cause of hunger is an increase in metabolism, which might mean that you are eating a good nourishing diet. Don't limit your food at this time or your metabolism will drop back down. Or it could be the time of the month. There is a time before your period that your metabolism rises and you feel more hungry. Because your metabolism is higher you can afford to eat more.

                Most studies suggest an increase in eating of around 100 to 200 calories in the days before bleeding occurs,1,2 but this appears to be offset by the small rise in metabolism (around 5 to 10 percent)3 that occurs during the same time period. In other words, the body tends to adjust the calories in/calories out on its own. Therefore, in a weight-stable state, no changes in weight will occur.

                Of course the body adjusts it calories in/calories out on its own all the time.

                mommyrunmommy - is it worth changing your diet but keeping the coffee? I know Mark likes his coffee so it's not essential to give it up. Even just doing all the other stuff is going to help you. Maybe give up the coffee later if you still feel you need to.

                  My husband has lymphedema in his lower legs, but his results from Parkinson's disease meaning he doesn't use those muscles very effectively. Have you tried swimming (or kicking with a kickboard) as exercise where gravity would not be working against you? Doctors gave him bad treatment until he finally got to an occupational therapist who was a lymphedema specialist. The only thing that helped him was keeping his legs wrapped all the time to force the fluid out. He graduated from bandages to velcro closed wraps because the specialist knew he wouldn't be able to manage support stockings. He wears thost 24/7.

                  I managed my diabetes with diet and exercise only for 6 years, but then I did decide to try Metformin, which is actually a medication with relatively few harmful effects. I had no digestive upset at all (which is unusual) and it started me on the path of losing weight. I will probably stay on it until my A1c goes down below 5.5.

                  • Thanks for the replies. I have been eating when hungry. Its rather inconvenient, though, when it strikes in the middle of the night. Definitely not due to "that time of the month" -- as I said, I'm post-menopausal and have been for at least five years.

                    The "swim-kicking" with a paddle board sounds interesting. Since I live in Wisconsin, it is not swim weather, but it's something I could try when the pool opens up. Yeah, I could join somewhere with an indoor pool, but I'm making enough changes right now. If I try to add more, I'll just end up not doing some of them. At least the pool here in my condo complex is free, and a paddle board is inexpensive and easy to store. I thought I might do some walking in the water too, especially when regular old walking seems too hot in the summer. I'll have to figure out when is the "least populated" time -- I don't give a darn about hurting people's eyes with my appearance, but I DO care about convenience to me! :-) Late afternoon perhaps.

                    I was down even more this morning. Now I'm HOPING it's water weight, because otherwise, its going a little too fast. I suppose the next few weeks, nothing will budge, and I will be regretting that previous thought.

                      I've been semi primal for about 10 years and last year was a real struggle for me. Identify what is giving you the most trouble and work on that. For me it is specific foods like wheat- I just can't eat that grain in any amount and be on track. Dairy has caused me a lot of trouble also. I've walked a ton the last 4-5 years but started getting insulin resistance/fat gain due to food choices despite being pretty active. I've also lost a lot of muscle and still need to work on that.......

                      I've gotten a lot of inspiration lately from a guy who calls himself the Bulletproof Executive:

                      His food chart is kind of nice, has helped me realize I can't be healthy if I eat dairy and grains regularly.

                      I've also been really intrigued/impressed with cold thermogenesis and think it is really worth looking at. Even though the warm season is coming up (not clear exactly on how CT works out of season, if ppl keep doing it), you might want to read about it and try it now- it really does seem to have some interesting effects/benefits.

                        Why are you giving up coffee? Because you think it's causing blood sugar issues?

                        I drink 12 oz in the morning. If I feel like more, I have decaf. I don't drink coffee after noon.

                        I've tried coffee substitutes, but they mostly suck. Teeccino is drinkable -- I have it in the evenings before bed with some stevia and a splash of cream.

                        I'm going to start on half-caff in the next few weeks, since we're going to be TTC in late April, and I'd like to start working on lowering my caffeine intake now rather than later. I don't think I can take myself off it, though. Too many headaches.

                          I am so happy to have found this thread. I just started yesterday and am still finding my way around. I love the book so far but the forum has been more helpful.

                          I am 46 and I have to say this past year has been my worst. Two years ago I was at 120. Since then I have been on an upward climb. It is mostly in my tummy and hips. I am 5'2 so I would be happy at 125 but I fear I will never see that number again.

                          I love to run. I have ran two half- marathons and a ton of 5-10ks but do to injuries I only run at the most 6 miles. I lift weights 3 x a week. Now it's mostly body weight exercise and things with my Bosu.

                          I have read to about page 4 so far but I wanted to post and say hi before going to the store. I started a journal here too. I need the accountability. I hope to make lots of new friends here since nobody I know would ever eat like this....lol

                          • Okay, I'm confused. What is with the one-liner posts with three "red x" boxes by junior members (I am one myself, but I've not posted anything like that)? Is is some sort of failed spam attempt? The first one is now gone, but there are two others recently in this thread. Currently #204 and #208. Anyone shed some light?

                            Onalark, I was addicted to caffeine many years ago, not through coffee but tea. I shudder to think what I used to drink -- powdered/dehydrated, made very strong and "sweetened" with Sweet 'n' Low (sodium saccharine) -- yuck. Anyway, I went cold turkey off that by drinking herbal tea sweetened with honey (this was way before aspartame and waaay before Splenda, both of which I would have used if they existed, or sodium cyclamate if it was still available in this country). I had horrible headaches for 10 days, which I treated with Advil. It sucked. I think that must be more than 20 years ago.

                            Now, I mostly drink herbal tea, but I have regular tea sometimes, usually in a restaurant where its just easier, and sometimes at home. The caffeine no longer bothers me, when it's just in that amount, as an occasional thing. You can probably get off caffeine entirely if you just do it gradually. Give your body time to adjust to the half-caffeine, then try cutting it more. Perhaps you can avoid the headaches that way.

                            Just recently (i.e. early part of this year), I tried to cold-turkey on the honey in my herbal tea (I drink a lot of it) and that was a total failure, so I did the gradual cut back thing, and that worked. I don't LOVE the tea the way I used to, however; pretty sure what I loved was the honey. I still drink it, but I've found that a lot of the herbal varieties I liked when I used honey are pretty abysmal without it.

                            I never learned to like coffee, so I don't know what it's mysterious hold is on taste buds. It seems like it's got to be something MORE than the caffeine, because plenty of people have gone to decaf, but won't/can't give it up entirely.

                            Anyway, sorry for digressing too much from the topic (how this is different for women). I have nothing to add on that front at the moment.

They've got some kind of script that scrapes a sentence or two off someone else's post, then uses that to put up a post that appears legit so as to fool you into not reporting it as spam. Sometimes I think they even have spam farms full of real people who do it. If you click the reply with quote, you'll see the links exposed where those red x's are and see that it's spam. They're just trying to spam the world with links so as to increase their rankings in search engines. I click the death triangle on them and sometimes the moderators will remove them, sometimes not. They need more moderators around here.
