  • Can I "cancel" a bad meal with cardio?

    About one night a week, I allow myself to have a bad meal and a few beers. The next day I definitely pay the piper. I know it would be altogether better to just do away with my cheat night, but that's not going to happen right now.

    Here are my thoughts: Cardio is bad because it causes you to eat more carbs. People who are cardio-addicts can eat a few more carbs than the rest of us, as long as they get those from the better carbs, like rice or sweet potatoes. So, essentially, cardio is the antitheses of carb.

    I hate cardio. It takes a long time, and it makes my knees hurt (running at least). Would it make sense to do cardio the morning after a cheat night to burn away the bad carbs that I consumed. Or would I be better off just jumping back into my primal lifestyle?

    Excess cardio is also bad because it is a stressor. You up your cortisol. So I don't really see how it would help to put an already stressed body through even more stress.

        I would just focus on making the next day as clean as possible in terms of food. I hate cardio, except sprints, so I'll never advocate it!

          No, because:

          a) Cardio will make you crave more carbs, as you yourself said, and it's pretty darned easy to rationalize some bread and crap down your throat when you're hungry and tired.
          b) This will set up a cycle of sin and penance and will never target the underlying issue, if there is one.

          If you are going to eat a bad meal, then own it and move on.

            Anything that depletes your glycogen stores is going to make you want carbs, and there's nothing wrong with that!! You can 'cancel out' excess energy with activity, but I doubt that after a night of beers you are brimming with energy. Instead of planning on 'cheats', just eat the food in question when you feel like it's a good time to eat it.

            And cardio is a stressor, but so is any activity that requires some effort. Why are you asking about cardio, anyway? You will burn the carbs you ate just by existing.

                I make room for a cheat here and there in this lifestyle and I do not feel bad about it or try to overdue it on exercise to make up for it. It is what you do MOST of the time that will determine things. So I guess that would fall under the 80/20 rule. Just do your best and move on. Don't worry or stress over it.
                I'm too stubborn to give up so I keep on trying.

                You're never going to get to the top of the stairs if you don't walk up them.

                  I find that when I have bad night of food, a good run feels good. It doesn't erase what happened the night before, but it can be a mental reset to move forward from. Also, don't fall for that cortisol BS line used by those who hate running and throw that around as "logic" to justify their emotion. Unless you're logging some legit miles (which it sounds like you're not - given you hate running), a simple 5K or 10k at moderate pace is a non-event and will not send you on a carb binge. I'm not saying you should run or even need to, but it's certainly not a "bad" idea.

                    But if you've eaten pro-inflammatory foods, stressing out the walls of your arteries is a BAD idea. That would be akin to putting water in your car instead of oil, and then deciding to make it better by having a street race that night.

                      HIIT before the cheat meal?
                      In all of the universe there is only one person with your exact charateristics. Just like there is only one person with everybody else's characteristics. Effectively, your uniqueness makes you pretty average.

                          This screams disordered eating to me. Having to pay a pennance for food choices is no bueno. Be an adult and own your choices. If you want to drink some beer and know there will be consequences, own the decision. Don't punish yourself with cardio.
