  • stinky vff's

While I am a barefooting flip flop kinda girl, dh wears vff's. He loves them. BUT, man do they stink! How do you clean them (is this necessary?) and get the smell out of them (this is definitely necessary!)?

    Any suggestions?

Fully machine washable. Sun drying is best.

Birthday Shoes made a nice blog post about how to get rid of vff stink. The Definitive Guide to Cleaning Vibram Five Fingers a.k.a. How to Get the Smell out of your Vibrams!

I almost always wear toe socks with my vff's (you can get them cheap off e-bay) and I think they are best at keeping them from getting stinky.

I'll wash them in the washing machine. If that doesn't do it, or I'm feeling lazy, or like a completionist I'll soak them in an effervescent denture cleaner. Then dry them.

If they're really bad, I buy from REI so I can take them back.

Same, made a "quick run" for rain gear on Sat. It uh... well, let me just say, I'm going to have a lot less to put into my savings account this pay period.

They have such great stuff though - I actually was thinking of getting a part time job there to get the discount on some high ticket gear I need to pick up...

                Thanks everyone!

REI is luckily not conveniently located for us, otherwise it would be a problem!

I've done a machine wash, followed by a diluted vinegar soak (for about an hour), then air dry. Works every time.

I scrub mine w/ a baking soda paste (just a little bit of water added to the baking soda). Then popped them in to the washing machine and let them dry out in the sun. No more smell

my last ditch effort for rescuing some similar shoes (stinktastic climbing shoes - oh god they smelled like feet and off cheese and yeast all at once; so horrible!) was to disinfect the hell out of them with a Dettol solution, then coat the insides and out with a baking soda paste overnight. then i rinsed off the baking soda and threw them in the washing machine. voila, and none too soon - it was getting so i could clear the climbing gym.
