  • HDL too high?



    I'm a 26 year old female and my HDL has jumped to 128 after going primal (bringing my total cholesterol to 248!!). My triglycerides and LDL are relatively low... Conventional wisdom says the higher HDL the better. But can this number be *too* high?

    In a word, no.


    If you'll post your numbers (trigs, HDL, LDL and total), I'll give you some analysis of them. I'm known for that on this forum.

    Primal eating in a nutshell: If you are hungry, eat Primal food until you are satisfied (not stuffed). Then stop. Wait until you're hungry again. Repeat.

      Here are my numbers:


      LDL-C Direct: 107

      HDL-C Direct: 128

      VLDL-C Direct: 12

      Sum Total: 247

      Triglycerides- Direct: 42

      Total Non-HDL-C (LDL+VLDL): 119

      Total APOB 100-Calc: 68

      LP(a) Cholesterol: 10

      IDL-C: 92

      Sum Total LDL-C: 107

      Real-LDL Size Pattern: A

      Remnant Lipo (IDL_VLDL3): 12

      HDL-2 (large, buoyant): 48

      HDL-3 (small, dense): 80

      VLDL-3 (remnant lipo): 7

        High HDL and low triglycerides are a very very good combination! I'm sure Griff will give the "real" explanation (I'm not so good on the details, lol), but I'm pretty sure your numbers are good!

          OK, well, I see from the layout of your test results that you had direct measurement of everything, which is good. Always get that if you can. A lot of times they'll try to pass off a calculated LDL as the "real" LDL level, and when your trigs are below 100, that number is almost always overestimated.


          Your Real-LDL Size Pattern is LDL (a). That's great, because that means that your LDL are the non-atherosclerotic, "large and fluffy" type that are neutral and non-damaging. If it was LDL (b) you'd have the damaging, small, dense type of LDL.


          Now let's talk ratios.


          The ideal ratio of Total/HDL is 4.4 for women and 5 for men.


          Your Total/HDL ratio is 247/128, or 1.9. That's less than half of the "ideal," which is phenomenal.


          The ideal ratio of Trig/HDL is 2 or below. 4 is high. 6 is "danger!!" Yours is 48/128, or 0.375, which is, again, phenomenal.


          Also, according to http://wwww.yourmedicaldetective.com/public/532.cfm and several other sites, the ratio of your trigs to your HDL will indicate whether your LDL is small and dense (bad) or large and fluffy (neutral). A larger number indicates smaller LDL particles and a smaller number indicates larger LDL particles. It's an inverse relationship. As you can see from your Real-LDL size pattern, this holds true for you as well. You don't even have a mixed Real-LDL pattern of A/B (where some particles are good and others are bad). Yours is - well, pardon the pun - straight A.


          And additionally, a low ratio of Trig/HDL is great because it's a semi-reliable indicator of lower free insulin levels. Lower free insulin is good. However, this doesn't appear to work for those of African descent, so take that with a grain of salt.

            I might be wrong but aren't the large LDL particles going into your cells and the HDL coming out of the cells back to the liver?


            Would that not mean there is positive rebuilding/repair at a cellular level?
