2011 Honda Civic GX Overview - Official Site

onda sees it. Why can't those in power see it?

It gets the equivalent of 24/36 mpg and an equivalent gallon of CNG is currently around $1.30.

And we can produce 100% of it in the United States.

This is a car currently for sale from Honda for $25,000. It's not some tech demo or a hybrid that's so much more expensive than an equivalent non-hybrid that it'll take years to pay for itself, if it ever does.

Any gasoline engine can burn NG. It's especially easy with modern fuel injected engines, no parts have to be changed, just new programming for the computer.

You do have to add the fuel tank tho, which is the most expensive part. You'd have to have two separate fuel tanks for starters and the ability to change your engines computer programming on the fly.

There are a ton of 3rd party hardware options available that do that very thing for diesels now, so I know it can be done for gasoline engines. But it'd be a custom job right now, there isn't anything available off the shelf that could do it.

You'll lose some horsepower because the compression ratios in gasoline engines aren't optimal for natural gas. Your engine will last much much longer on NG though.

It's probably good to harness this resource if it's economically and ecologically feasible to do so, if for no other reason than diversification/risk management. I'm skeptical that NG is the solution to anyone's quest for complete energy independence though. One obvious reason is that it will eventually run out.

How much additional transportation/infrastructure expense would be required to put NG at every gas station? How much more will NG cars really cost (it looks like that Civic is ~ 40% more than a standard Civic)? How much will NG prices increase due to increased demand?

Why would "those in power" want the whole nation to be prosperous? The sick people running the world care only about themselves and their own children. They've got all the wealth and they're not about to lose it one way or another. They couldn't care less.
You lousy kids! Get off my savannah!

Bread and circuses keep the masses from demanding that those in power don't act in an ogliarchial fashion.

When oil gets expensive enough, people will switch. I like natural gas powered vehicles - it would set the distribution systems up nicely for hydrogen which would be the next in line as a power source (from splitting water with solar/wind plants)

All of the energy we could ever need shines down upon us and is in the ground under our feet.

the tech is not ready to use it on scale though

While the tech is improving every day, there is no reason not to start massive trials immediately to both experiment/judge long term feasibility and to ease current coal/gas consumption rates.

Isn't fracking a big problem with getting at the natural gas?

it's reasonably popular here where big petrol engined cars can be converted quite cheaply to run on CNG and a minority of fuel stations have CNG pumps. Never really took off though, even though the tax is <50% of petrol. Not sure why not.

It's not everlasting though, we'll still run out unless we burn less - so go buy a bike!!

I spend zero dollars on gas monthly. Guess how. Hint: it involves two feet.
In all of the universe there is only one person with your exact charateristics. Just like there is only one person with everybody else's characteristics. Effectively, your uniqueness makes you pretty average.
