  • raw apple cider vinegar: mother

I bought Bragg's raw apple cider vinegar probably 10 months ago and just haven't used very much of it. I finally pulled it out to put in the chicken stock I'm making and it looks like it has grown like 3 mothers. They look like the kombucha scobies that I've seen pictures of online.

Has anyone else had this happen? I want to do something cool with them if I can, but I'm not sure what I can do. I haven't heard of this happening with vinegar before. Any ideas? Anyone have experience with this?

Fascinating! What would happen if you put one on top of a jar of wine do you think? Would this make natural wine vinegar?

Good question! I know next to nothing about vinegar, oddly. But it would seem a shame to throw them out! Maybe I'll try to take a picture of them later...

Wine or hard cider, eh? Both alcoholic...I like it.

From what I've read, any fruit juice/fruit based alcohol will do. Check out: How to Make Vinegar.

This happened to me month's ago when I mixed coconut vinegar with a little pomegranate juice. Because of the color, I didn't notice any of the "mothers" until I swallowed one. Yuck, it was like gulping down a giant wad of snot. I had no idea this was a positive development; I assumed it had gone bad and threw it all out. You mean I could have had free vinegar?!
