  • Lent - Are you giving anything up?

Forgive if this is a duplicate entry, I must of hit the wrong button (no surprise there).

Happy Lent or however you say it.

So I was thinking about this on the drive to work this am. What to actually give up for Lent.

I do this every year. Oddly enough, I never think about it on Fat Tuesday, but always decide by the close of Ash Wednesday and then make my pledge and stick with it.

My usual offering is chocolate. But for what ever reason, this is just not hitting me right this year. I already gave up grains. So can't do that. Other ideas that came to mind . . .
    • getting on the bathroom scale - hmm not sure that is in the
    • Coffee - this is kind of scary
    • Dairy - this would be kind of tough, could be interesting though
    • No
Judgemental comments? - hmmm how do I track that?

I'll let you know by the end of the day.

I've given up judgmental comments/negative thoughts in the past, or I should say I've tried. I've never been fully successful (I think that would mean reaching an enlightened state that most people would find downright obnoxious). But I do try to be more aware during Lent of my thoughts and actions, whatever they may be.

Maybe I should just give up dairy, that might be easier...

So, since Lent is the "celebration" of Christ's trek to and survival in the desert for 40 days....incidentally, where God allowed him to be tempted by Satan himself several times...I would think it would only be fitting to give up something that tempts YOU. For 40 days (i.e. Easter Sunday is exactly 40 days after Ash Wednesday).

Sounds like Dairy is on the menu for you. C'mon, do it. You know you want to...just think...Christ had NOTHING for 40 days and was offered the world and then some by Satan. And he refused all worldly temptations. Man, THAT was some willpower...

Anyway, for me, dairy is already done but I have a lingering diet soda addiction from when I was CW. I think this may be the perfect opportunity to relieve myself of it forever.

Good Luck and let us know what you decide to do...

        Write them all down

then reflect on why you thought that way, you'll learn far more about yourself unless you've been properly trained to be judgmental

Another Lent thread? Okay, I'm still giving up alcohol outside of the office.

            Yes. I'm giving up Monsanto.

For real. I'm doing an experiment to see whether it's possible to spend 6 weeks without supporting Monsanto in any way. Wish me luck!!

(I'm blogging about the project, if you're interested. Link in siggy.)

Yes, you are right. Easter is late this year. The traditional Catholic church holiday of Easter was originally supposed to be 40 days after Ash Wednesday....

The Sundays between Ash Wednesday and Lent don't count as part of Lent. Therefore, it's 6 weeks of 6 days, plus Wed, Thurs, Fri and Sat of this week: 6x6 + 4.

In the past, I've given up a number of things. But right now, I'm aiming at 100% primal for the last 6 weeks leading to PrimalCon, so I've nothing further to give up.

Huh, you ain't kidding. Good thing I'm Protestant So it's still 40 days; it just takes 47 days to get there. So are people allowed on Sundays to have/do the stuff they gave up, then?

The actual day for easter is the first sunday after the first full move after the vernal equinox.
So this year March full moon is 3-19, but equinox not until 3-20. April 18 is next full moon, making Easter on 4-24. (yes I am geeking and know these things).

Lent is actually a moveable feast that is 46 days prior to easter (according to WIKIPEDIA)46 days (40 days not counting Sundays) as someone said above.

Still pondering what to sacrifice. My friends chimed in and asked if they had a say on giving up caffine. They said coffee wasn't good enough if you are going to replace it with other stimulents. Hmm I think there still might be some logistical play in there.

I don't know if I can give up dairy. just seems too scary.

After a full day of pondering and then finding my self yelling at the car in front of me. I am giving up cursing and desparaging remarks.

I figure with all the other excercise and food changes it was time to make an internal personal change.

so no words like <r@P, @$$, dumb @$$, etc. If I don't have anything nice to say, it is not going to come out of my mouth.

My hubby was laughing and baiting me last nice. Isn't that sweet. P

Giving up all "primal" sweets (e.g. dark chocolate). Since I'm also trying to do my first [modified] Whole30, I'm giving up all dairy with the exception of butter and occasional full fat yogurt (Fage) - at least until my order of coconut oil comes it. Since I'm restricted to dorm/dining hall food and therefore "pure" fat sources are not readily available (e.g. coconut products and avocado) I'm trying to minimize dairy as much as possible but realize I may need to use as an additional fat source.
