  • Having Trouble Entering Ketosis

I feel like I'm having trouble getting into ketosis. It's been 4 weeks and I don't have any of the symptoms all the other ketosis newbies talk about :-\
I eat clean-- lots of critter, healthy fat, and veggies. No fruit. I do bake, but even then my carbs are at 50 or below for the entire day, most days 20g or less. I move slowly, frequently, lift heavy things, get plenty of sleep, and IF regularly (cuz it's easy to do 16 hrs starting right after dinner, and ending with a late breakfast the next day)
    What am I doing wrong?
And yes, I use ketostix. They are very end of the light, non-keto spectrum.

I've been losing weight steadily since 09 (80 lbs), pre-Primal. Would this have anything to do with it?

No expert, here! But my understanding is that ketostix only indicate that you are spilling ketones in your urine. If you are using all the ketones, no color change!

I haven't had any bad breath or other body symptoms, but I am definitely losing fat and feel a "buzz" of energy.

I know I am getting stronger by huge bounds every week at the gym. Just the other day I moved up, almost effortlessly, 20 lbs in the weight room, and cranked out an 8 mph sprint on the TM like it was no big deal. I figured that was b/c of PB, not ketosis. Cranky after gym, though. Just wanna gnaw my arm off (absolutely fine before and during). Better after eating. Especially better after nap when I feel I need one (less often than the first 2 weeks now)

I really really really think you should go a month without any baking, and see what happens, assuming you really do want to enter ketosis and lose weight faster. I feel as if you're trying to get the best of both worlds right now, and I'm skeptical that's possible. No judgment in this at all...if you want to keep baking and seeking primal substitutes for baked goods, that's great...sounds like you're eating a lot healthier than you were pre-primal, so it's all progress, right? But I'd be amazed if the people on the forum who are in ketosis bake much at all.

I read a post just a little while ago where someone said it is hard to enter ketosis if you are insulin resistant.....not sure if it is true. I will see if I can find it. Any chance you are insulin resistant?

Yes. I'm T2 diabetic. I just got off of insulin in Oct, and trying to get off of glucophage now. I have seen a steady improvement in my blood sugar since starting PB.

I think it's definitely the baking that's preventing you from going into ketosis. Some people slip into ketosis really easily, but personally even a large amount of veggies is enough to knock me out of it. Try no baking for a while and see how you get on.

I thought one could get into ketosis if they stayed under 50g a day though?

I think you have to be under 30g to be in ketosis. Eat mostly meat and green veggies and fats and nothing else. No coconut milk, or coconut cream, or chocolates or almond flours or nuts, except macadamias. Some say 40-30. If you really want to go into ketosis, I'd recommend doing an "induction" type of thing and going under 20g for a week. That'll get you there for sure. That's what I did to start. Then started adding more carbs once my body had adjusted.

You have to go really low carb as a diabetic...no primalized CW foods. Meat and non-starchy veggies will get you there if you have the fortitude. I'm super lean until I start making almond meal cookies etc.

It's different for everyone. I agree with what Eelnus and Phaedrus said.

Okay. What about plain greek yogurt & cheese? Are they okay, or do I need to avoid them, too? Eating just meat and veggies would be painful & sad to me.

Yogurt every day? In any quantity? Not initially. 1 cup of Trader Joe's plain greek yogurt has 14g of carbs. But cheese has basically no carbs in it so that won't be an issue for ketosis.

I would ditch the yogurt and go for high fat content cheeses only and not everyday. You have to be careful with cheese.....It may have zero carbs per serving per the labeling rules but a serving may actually have almost 1 carb per tiny serving. I always have to take more insulin than the mathematical requirement for cheese.
