    Is this cool, or what?

Love the little quote by an architect (don't remember which page; you'll just have to look for it!) about how level floors are not desirable.

It looks like a Hobbit Hole
My whole life, I've felt like an animal......but I've ignored my instincts. I ignored what I really am. That will never happen again.

Who cares about potatoes, as long as Legolas is a regular visitor, I'm there.

i totally showed this to my husband some years ago (before moving here), when i was researching a lot about small, sustainable homes, and such. i loved it, and being a hobbit/LoTRs fan that he is, i thought he would too.

he hates small houses. he admits, he doesn't need a mansion, but he doesn't like tiny spaces like that. he wants a big house. this is because of his upbringing. his parents live in a nice, well-made three bedroom duplex with a nice little yard in a nice neighborhood. it's about 1300 sq feet, plus basement, attic, and garage. the rooms are nice sizes, and it's very cute and liveable.

the problem is, his parents are pack-rats boardering closely on hoarders. the house is cramped. and, his parents have serious emotional issues about money and being "poor." (i should state that they were given this house by my MIL's father -- it was a home that he built. so, she never paid more than the taxes on the property, and whatever the costs of maintaining. but they never entertained (the house is too small! not good enough!) and they always were talking about (and judging) other people who live in the next neighborhood over and their big houses. they have never moved (and never will), and that leaked into DH's brain.

i'm all about small. i love little cottages. i love cozy, well decorated spaces that are efficient and minimalist. i really love *living within our means* and sustainability. my husband (actually) feels the same way, but when i point out a place that would be great, he'll go "it's too small! we can't entertain! . . ." all the echos of his mother and father. truly, it makes a girl bats. LOL because we actually *do* share the same value about space and living and all of that, but when i bring up a viable option, he's like NO! it's too small! lol

                      oh well.

so, yeah, he protested aboutt his place as if i was forcing him to move in tomorrow. i love how nutty he is. like, he is totally a hobbit.

                        Oh they are brilliant!!
I just showed my husband and he is going to read it. He has been wittering on about us building a home from old shipping containers when we can eventually afford some land etc but these are soooo much more aesthetically pleasing!
We currently live in a very very damp, badly wired, single glazed, draughty cottage with no central heating but the rent is cheap...very cheap...which is enabling us to pay off our debts and hopefully, eventually will be a place for us to use as base while we buy land and build our own simple home. Somewhere like that Hobbit house would be like a dream come true!!

it's weird. we are the same, i mean, really very the same, *but* he has a different operating style. i'm a problem solver, quick to make decisions, and GO! and if there's an error, no worries, we'll just adjust as we GO!

he's more like think about it for AGES and then finally DECIDE and then MAKE A PLAN and then SLOWLY ac on it. And Don't Make Mistakes, ever. Or you are BAD. that's his dark side, that last bit.

he digs in his heals when he's stressed or when there might be change (he has to be 100% convinced that the change is right/good), and i'm more like "yeah, lets TRY it." i'm a little more wings than roots in that way.
