  • Worldwide Pull Up Challenge of 2011 Who's In?

Some other ladies and I got to chatting on my journal about how pull-ups have always been the hardest thing for us to accomplish, even when fairly physically fit otherwise. In fact, they can be so daunting that it's easy to give up on them before you even start.

So, some of us have started the Worldwide Pull-up Challenge to knock down this barrier in 2011.

To enter this challenge you must be

    1. Female or Male (Edited due to me being called a sexist for leaving the guys out)

    2. Totally incapable of doing even 1 un-assisted pull up at the present time

    3. Willing to really work at it to change this this year

So far myself, Roberta and Ellie G have taken up the challenge. Who else wants to add their name to the list?

We are sharing tips about ways of working up to doing a pull up etc.

Together we will get those chins over those bars!

YES! This is already my main fitness goal, to accomplish the elusive pull up!!! I even got a pull up bar for christmas.

I cannot do a single pull up/chin up.
The more I see the less I know for sure.

I can't do them unassisted yet either, but you're a sexist.

Aww. I'm sorry. It just seems like it's always so easy for most guys that it wouldn't be fair to the girls. But I suppose you're right. If you currently can not do any un-assisted pull up, not even one, there's no reason why we should leave the guys out of the fun.

See. This is what I mean. Show offs like this guy here make most girls want to give up.

I was just teasing about the sexist thing.

I've been doing leg assisted for a while. It seems like one sticking point that I can't get past. Funny thing is that I got closer when I weighed a lot more.

Keep your challenge feminine, but we can keep each other posted about our progress anyway.

The way I got past it was to press with the TOP of my feet, effectively limiting my assistance to leg extension (eliminated gluteal and quad assistance...the one leg...voila!

I'll join -- can't do a single one. Tuesday at the park, I was able to pull myself up, unassisted, for a grand total of one inch. (maybe).

Yeah, those assisted ones are tough to get past. It's really easy to let them be TOO assisted, particularly for us girls who's legs are stronger than our upper bodies. I've been trying some resistance band pull downs to try and break past this.

What do you mean by the top of the feet?

I don't qualify because I can do one, and sometimes two, unassisted chinups. But I wanted to chime in and say that a year ago I never would have guessed I would ever be able to do one. I used resistance bands, which in my opinion are SO much better than supporting part of your weight on a chair, which is how I was trying to do them initially. I was totally surprised when I did my first chinup without a band, and was hollering "Look at me! Look at me!" to my husband like I was a little kid. Yeah, I was a little excited. You guys/gals will feel so awesome when you get your chin over the bar without any help!

The top...where the tongue of the shoe hits. Put the top pf your foot against the chair, and extend your knee to assist the movement, rather than doing a squat.
