  • Prenatal/Vitamin D question

OK well since I got such great advice from you all about Vitamin D, I am now curious how much should I be taking on top of my prenatal vitamins. I am a little leary, I cut back over the past month. I am only taking what is in the prenatal, but now the SAD is kicking in this past week or so. Anyone have any experience with this? I am just a little gun shy to take too much in the vitamin dept for the sake of the baby.

Currently the prenatal is very low in the Vitamin D only like 800 IU I was doing like 3-4000 IU before

here is the complete list of vitamins listed on the prenatal

    Omega 3 400mg
    vit B1 2 mg
    vit B2 3.4 mg
    vit B6 25mg
    Vitamin B12 .02
    Folate 1.2 mg
    Vitamin D3 800IU
    Vit C 100mg
    Vit E 30IU
    Niacin 10mg
    copper 1mg
    zinc 25mg
    Iron ferronyl 35mg
    Ferrochel 5 mg

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I would get your blood levels tested. In the meantime, if you can stomach it, I would suggest taking 4,000 IUs of an oil-based D3. I recommend 4-5,000 IUs to all the pregnant moms I work with (I do prenatal coaching) and testing after 3 months of supplementation. There are so many babies being tested deficient at birth (and an epidemic of rickets in some areas) because their moms are deficient. Your baby's immune system will be better equipped if you are sufficient in D.

Excellent Dragonfly!! I just had my bloodlevels tested on Monday, I am not sure the results, I haven't called the dr about it. Good to know about the 4000 IU because that is about what I was taking beforehand it has been about 3 weeks that I have cut it out and I am not surprised that I am finding myself struggling with the SAD symptoms like I used to before PB.

Yeah, I have had no SAD symptoms since beginning supplementation last October. Also I forgot to mention how essential adequate D is for dental health. I had so many cavities as a kid because my mom was deficient (living in the UK when she was pregnant...any wonder why so many Brits have bad teeth?)
