  • Carrots - To peel?

    Just had an argument with friends in the kitchen about eating carrots. My buddy, the chef, says to peel them. His reasonings are that the outer skin is waxy and has dirt on it.

    I think that it's natural to have the skin, and the dirt has vitamin b-12 in it. If they're organic carrots, what's the problem?

    What's everyone else do?

    If they're organic, I would keep the skins on. Just wash them well so there's no grit.

      i don't peel anything unless it's an inedible skin.
      Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, steak in one hand, chocolate in the other, yelling "Holy F***, What a Ride!"

            leave the skin on....but in the world of fine dining they want it off....for appeal.

              I never peel any root vegetables. It's where all the nutrients are (so I've heard...possibly fallacious). I'll scrub 'em if dirty, but never peel.

                Its also often where the antinutrients are. Its safest to peel root vegetables, as much as I prefer not to. Don't know of any problem with carrot skin though

                  I never peel carrots. A certain amount of dirt is good for you. Besides that, I'm lazy.

                    If they are really dirty I scrub them under the tap, otherwise, eat it, it has the best nutrients.

                      I don't peel them unless they have a really tough layer for some reason. I rinse/wipe off any obvious dirt but I'm not even a huge washer of veggies. Yum carrots!

                        If they're organic, I'll scrub them w/ our veg brush under cold water. If they're not organic, I'll peel them. If they're from my garden, a quick rinse will do

                            I like use a garden spade to strategically sculpt around the carrot in order to achieve the ideal 1:1 ratio of carrot:dirt. It's absolutely delicious!

                            Don't plant your own carrots? That's okay! Just replant the store-bought ones in your yard and pretend like you grew them.

                            Don't have a yard? That's okay! You can do the same thing at any public park.

                            Winter freeze got the ground unworkable? That's okay! Maybe you can find some place to buy dirt here.
