  • Jack Sprat could eat no fat, his wife could eat no lean

and so between the both of them they licked the platter clean.

Did anyone else have an image of his wife being fat and him being rail thin?

Now I think about it being the opposite!

I had a book years ago full of those rhymes. That was the exact picture! He was skin and bone and she was a porker. A scrawny cat sat by his side and a fat pug by hers!

That was exactly the nursery rhyme I thought of the first time my now husband came over for dinner. He won't eat any fat on his meat at all and he looks like a surgeon cutting it all off. He thought I was weird when I told him to give it to me if he wasn't going to eat it.

And we have (off and on) looked exactly like the picture in the book. He's always been extremely thin and I've always been a little (or more) on the heavier side.

Yes! I always had the pudgy woman/thin man image in my head with this. We didn't have any books like that (or at least none survived my older sisters' childhoods), but that's what we're all taught from childhood, isn't it?
