  • Visceral vs subcutaneous fat

    Quick query / confusion here

Visceral fat is the bad stuff, wrapping round your organs, releasing hormones and all kinds of nasties.
Subcutaneous fat just kinda sits there and..well, sits there. Usually on your bum and thighs!

I keep hearing that all beer bellies, love handles etc MUST be visceral fat. But - given my "apple" body shape - I can prod through the flab (ha!) and find my abs UNDERNEATH. So my own pot belly is subcutaneous fat...right? I'm not saying there's no visceral there as well, but same applies when I prod the muffin top too. Nice to know I have muscles anyway

So in theory, is my subcutaneous wobbliness less harmful than "real" visceral fat, despite giving me the same body shape?

Just taking a thought for a walk...

You probably need to do both skin fold measurements, and impedance testing to suss out your visceral fat burden.

Apple body shapes tend to have visceral fat. Pear and hourglass tend toward subq fat.

Thanks for the responses, but perhaps I didn't phrase my question well.
Is it still the visceral fat if it lies between my skin and my muscle (ie in a subcutaneous position)?

If it is between your muscle and skin it is Subcutaneous fat.
