  • How long to fast before fasting appointment?

My much anticipated appointment with the doc is this coming Tuesday morning. They always tell me not to eat or drink after midnight and I don't. Most times I would have cut it off around 8 or 9 a.m..

Is there any benefit to fasting longer or is there any detriment to fasting longer? I don't want artificially lower numbers, but what would be an appropriate amount of time to fast to get the most accurate and meaningful results?

I've often heard that ~12 hours before the appointment is a good cutoff time. The link below says that if the number of hours isn't specified, then assume 12 hours:

I had this problem the other day, I was too fasted for a blood test (20 hours). The clinic suggested no more than 16 hours.

Typical fast recommended for lipid profile is 16 hours. I personally don't hesitate to have some water during this period, but only water, and not a huge amount.
