  • What are your thoughts on Dr. Mercola?

I came across Dr. Joseph Mercola's website while doing a seach online about the dangers of Soy. Wow! He has a lot of very good articles about cholesterol, sugar, soy, artificial sweeteners, etc. I would like to share some of these write-ups with members of my family and friends. But, I want to make sure this guy is credible and that nobody is going to come back to me and dismiss the information because of the person who is supplying it. So, anyone know anything about this guy? Is he a reliable source of information?

yeah, he has a lot of very good info on his site..plus he's a qualified doctor.
Some people have issues with the fact he sells products on his site, but he himself addressed the issue in an article... basically he has to be able to fund the site, as well as deal with lawsuits from big corporations who take issue with his advice. Furthermore he sells only what he believes in, and he does offer all his information for free,

ETA - that said, i agree with others on his fear mongering...this can be a major put off for many people, and is a shame because people who take it all seriousely will get themselves stressed out and unhappy which is not healthy at all

If there is ANY other source for the information, do not use Mercola as a source. While he has some good information on his site, he fearmongering, near-hysteria presentation of data scares most away. And in the last couple of years, he's gone off the deep end with some of his recommendations.

Personally, I can't stand to read him, listen to him or visit his site any longer.

I would suggest not using him as a source if you are wanting to educate someone in regards to nutrition. He tends to hold some views that others would consider "wacky" and could use that to discredit him.

i liked him until he started talkin' smack about cod liver oil. he's pretty much a salesman like kevin trudeau in my eyes. although natural cures is what led me into diet and natural health. oh well;-)

                    TinaC,

Once you have lost credibility, it is hard to get back. I suggest cross checking Dr. Mercola with Cardiologist Dr. Wm Davis here:
                    http://heartscanblog.blogspot.com/

Dr. Davis is TOTALLY reputable and is my bible on all questions:
Here is what he has to say about soy products. Nothing bad.

Do a search at his site on WHEAT and here is what you will find:

I used to read his site a lot as he would often have great articles. But he just tries to sell way too much.

I remember watching a video of him making his daily smoothie that contained his whey protein powder. His whey is expensive and not many people can afford it. So in the comments section people were asking if the recommended any other brands that were more reasonable and he refused to recommend any other brands. This is when I ditched the guy for the most part.

He gives out great information and I am completely fine with him selling his own products. But he just goes overboard with it.

Thanks for all the replies. Its a real shame to not be able to use this man as a source. His writing is clear and to the point and I really wanted to use his stuff on artificial sweeteners.

                          Thanks all!

Yeah, I've been very turned off by his stuff.

His motives are transparent, and he uses all the time honored tactics of snake oil salesmen. This makes him seem like a quack to many, which then hurts the credibility of others who might share some of his beliefs. Not a fan.
