  • Coconut Oil

    I am interested in starting regular use of coconut oil in cooking and for sat fat intake. Are there any guidelines for it, and how beneficial is coconut oil in your personal experience. I have heard it helps with fat loss, and is good for overall health, and I have read the coconut and coconut oil post Mark did, but I am interested in your experience and what it has done or not done for you. I figure the best way to research something is to ask those who have used it. So how much per day, when do you use it/take it, where and how, I want to find out as much as I can. Thanks

    I stopped all vegitable oils ('cept olive oil for dresssings) last year around January. Used nothing but coconut oil since then. I get it by the gallon from Nutiva online (can't beat the free shipping). I cook everything with it. It's great for cooking eggs. IF I make a shake-like thing, I use coconut milk and coconut oil instead of milk, then add a few raw eggs. I get at least 3-4 tablespoons a day, even if I have to take it like medicine with a spoon!

      I use CO for a lot of my cooking, as well as a moisturizer on my skin.

      A tablespoon of CO in cup of hot coffee or tea in the morning gives me an amazing energy boost.

        I have heard about adding it to coffee, thank you for reminding me of that, I will try that this weekend. And I have tried it as lotion and lip balm, works great. Thanks

          I plan to start with 1 tablespoon and work my way up. I have kind of plateaued so I am hoping this will kick start me on the next level of being primal. I tried cooking veggies with it once and the didnt turn out great but I may have had the heat set to high. Thanks for the input , Good Ideas!

            I just eat it by the spoonful. I don't like it so much for my eggs but it's not bad. I think it definitely does help with weight loss because when I remember to eat some more often that's when I start seeing the weight drop. It's those MCT's.

                I add between 1 and 2 tablespoons to my morning smoothie. It actually adds a very nice tropical flavor. I use the Nutiva brand.

                  I have tried it in my coffee -oil slick like the gulf of mexico on top, bloody awful! I have tried cooking a stir fry with it - dont know what happened but it really was just the worst stir fry i have ever cooked,ie, bloody awful. I tried having a half teaspoon of it as everyone else on here seemed to be raving about it - you guessed it, bloody awful, was nearly sick! so now I've relegated it to skin care, its very nice as a lip balm.

                    I bet the brand may have an effect on the quality somewhat, but do you think that if I take it it should be in the morning or should it be a supplement for any meal I make?

                      I tried it in other foods, but the Nutiva brand is very fragrant and affects the flavor of foods. For example, if I use it to "fry primal chicken" it takes on a coconut flavor, which is fine, except it was supposed to be rosemary fried chicken. Rosemary coconut fried chicken just didn't taste right to me. I settled on putting in the smoothie, because it actually adds to the flavor in a positive way.

                      You can really substitute in anything as long as you like the flavor of coconut. I tried the spoon thing, but it did nothing for me. A couple of people have recommended it as a sexual aide...so I will try that next.

                          about a tbs before breakfast and sometimes another tbs before dinner or mid afternoon. It's yummy. At first it grossed me out but now I really like it. Enjoy.

                            I put a tablespoon or two (Hard to tell, it was like a pebble size chunk) in my coffee this morning, and it was fine, no problem, yeah it was a little oily, but my lips have never been softer after morning coffee. I think I will keep this up at least that way I'm not having to chew it.
