  • Primal booze at a convention

I'll be away on a business trip for eight days. I know there will be drinking (a bunch of writers hanging out? Oh yes, there will be drinking), and lately, wine has been hitting me hard after just one glass. Any booze recommendations? Sure, I could go the no-booze route and have club soda with lime. But for those times I'd like something with a kick...what do you suggest?

Wine doesn't sit well with me (always get a headache). Clear alcohol seems to do the least harm. Having plenty to eat helps too of course.

Read this the other day. I don't know how well it works but going out to a bar to catch the bruins game tomorrow night with some guys from work. Probably gonna try it out.

That said, I'm a beer guy. If you prefer beer, take a bit of a holiday and don't beat yourself up. That said, use good practices otherwise. Eat as primally as possible, get some sleep, some exercise, etc.

glorth2, highly appreciated. Maybe I'll try scotch...

Long ago. Neat. Recall not liking it. But tastes most definitely change...

Actually, if I want to feel "tipsy" after just a drink or two and not be tempted to have more, eating well away from the drinks is a good idea. I find myself actually, strangely, less likely to get drunk this way. Much easier to tell when you're nearing your limit.

Eat a good meal full of nutritious stuff later on to quell any stomach issues if you need to. Or, just sleep it off.

I do fine with red wine myself. Something about white wine doesn't sit well with me though. I usually avoid it. And yeah, vodka or rum are pretty good liquor choices for most. You can go NorCal Margarita if you want to impress your friends with your sophistication though (they don't need to know what it actually is).

Scotch and soda has never failed me either though.

Also, bonus points if you can convince a friend to down a mixed "four horseman." xD

The metal in my head clangs and clings as I walk - freaks my balance out. So the natural thought is just clogged up. Totally clogged up. So we need to unplug these dams, and make the the natural flow... It sort of freaks me out. We need to unplug the dams. You cannot stop the natural flow of thought with a cling and a clang..."

I have definitely noticed that my alcohol sensitivity has increased. So I'd shoot for beer (less total alcohol).
Disclaimer: I eat 'meat and vegetables' ala Primal, although I don't agree with the carb curve. I like Perfect Health Diet and WAPF Lactofermentation a lot.

Ah, the gluten always gets me in beer. Ugh. Feel bloated for days.

If I want something with beer level alcohol though, a good hard cider (and John Adams drank a pint a day for BREAKFAST) is nice and refreshing and doesn't give me the bloat.

There is no more total alcohol in a glass of wine, glass of beer or shot depending on volume of course.

Gin and tonic, I like a generous squeeze of lime <3

I drink cider pretty often too. Try to find the driest one possible.

But it's more diluted so it's easier to drink the wine too fast.
