  • Dryers Low Carb Ice Cream

    I have been on your diet for over 2 months now and I went from 198 to 173. I follow it pretty close but over the last month I have stayed at 173-175. I eat lots of vegetables, nuts and apples. I also eat meat and a very small amount of organic cheese, usually just grilled on top of the meat for flavor. I found at Stater Bros a ice cream made by Dryers call Carb Smart. It saids 4 total carbs per serving and I said thats for me. It tasted like real ice cream and I take a half a cup and mix it with fresh strawberries after a long day to take care of my sweet tooth. And it is so good that I eat it everynight while I stay on your diet during the day. Remember the Seinfield episode where they were eating low fat yogert and they were all getting fat because it was a lie. Could this be untrue advertising and if it is could this make me stay at my current weight because I would love to get down to 155 before summer. Thank You!

    Honestly, I have no idea what half those things in the ingredient list are...

    If you must eat ice cream, hand churn some homemade ice cream from raw milk, cream, sugar and vanilla. Not only will you control what goes into the ice cream, you will also get a fun "play" workout from churning it by hand. Just don't churn it too fast or you will have some sweet butter on your hands.

      It says 4g NET carbs, but they are counting sugar and 'sugar alcohol' differently. Not to mention the ingredient list is like a science experiment.

      If you want ice cream, get real ice cream as a treat, not an every-night dessert. Eating that junk every night may not be what's keeping you from dropping some more weight but it certainly isn't helping, nor is it going to be helping your overall health.

        There have been studies to indicate that just the taste of something sweet generates an insulin response. So even with low "net carbs", you are still derailing your fat loss efforts with sweets.

        There are no short cuts.

        The good news is that if you break that sweet craving, you won't feel the need to eat sweets every night and it becomes a non-issue.

          Video, here's the nutrition info on your ice cream. There are actually 13 grams of carb in each half-cup of product, and 4 grams of sugar. I don't know how much you're eating, but most people will eat more than 1/2 cup at a time. That adds up to a ton of carbs, and a lot of sugar, especially if you're also adding fruit. This could really mess up your metabolism and efforts to lose weight.

          A better choice would be to freeze a can of coconut milk, and moosh it up with fork. It will make you just as happy, I promise.
          They're not really lying per se on the package, but just because it says, "low carb" doesn't make it good for you

            The sweetness of the ice cream is probably hurting you in some way, we can all agree on this? Also, referring to the ingredient list, you are putting chemicals into your body, this is also not good. That is not a real food, and its just contributing to your carb and sugar intake, and doing nothing for you nutritionally. You will probably find similar posts advising you that the sweetest thing you should be eating is the apple. sorry

              Defining low-carb

              We all have the ability to rationalize but to me, this ice cream is not low carb @ 13 grams. This should not be an acceptable daily treat. The ingredient list is scary. Not to sound like an ice cream snob but shouldn't ice cream taste good? It may be passable in taste but if you are rationalizing these bad carbs into your diet then I would at least choose a local dairy farm or Hagen Daaz and eat some great ice cream. Really treat yourself good. Really enjoy the food.

              I think a reward once a week probaly would benefit most of us. I personally tend to diet strictly and then binge. I am constantly teaching myself a more moderate appraoch every day.

              Currently: I'm am trying to stick to pairing my cheat day on my sprint day (7-10 days)

              I ran sprints today and allowed myself a few bites of Ben and Jerry's. It was not that good or I may have had more than a few bites.

              Love the idea about freezing coconut milk.

                I remember a good handful of scientific reports some years ago pointing out that although sugar is bad, the combination of sugar with dairy is worse. I will seek any hints of that and if successful, I will come back to the thread.

                  You'd be much better off just enjoying a tub of Hagen Dazs. Afaik it's the most common ice cream with the least amount of indigestible, fake ingredients.

                  If you're really jonesing for sweets, then go ahead and have them. If you're going to do that, though, it makes more sense to downsize the amount of processed crap you're consuming than to simply count carbs.

                  I mean, if it's a choice between raw honey and full fat cream, or aspartame, rat poison, and dead babies...I just don't understand why anyone would go with the latter, macro-nutrient ratios be damned.

                    I know it's not the same thing but when I want ice cream, I just add some frozen berries to full fat Greek-style yogurt and mash the berries up with a spoon as they begin to soften. It satisfies my want for ice cream and you can change it up with all sorts of ingredients (I like fresh lemon juice and a few stevia drops).

                    Otherwise, I agree with many of the other posters....enjoy the real deal in moderation and be done with it.

                      Have you tried logging your food for a few days (weighing/measuring it all carefully) to see if your fat/protein/carbs are all where you want them? It might not be the ice cream specifically that's to blame... it sounds like you're eating quite a bit of fruit and nuts which are high in carbs. Fruit and nuts are certainly part of the primal blueprint, but if you're not losing anymore maybe you need to get a little more strict. Even if you're in that 50-100g carbs range that Mark says is good for weight loss, you might need to drop it a bit to start losing again. There are some people here who were never able to lose unless they went under 50g carbs per day.
