  • Having a hard time digesting fats?

    Greetings all,

I have been on a ketogenic diet since December 27, 2013. Suddenly, last week, I started experiencing GERD symptoms. There was burning at first, now there is just a feeling behind my sternum of food 'backing up'.

I am wondering if I don't have enough stomach acid, as I've read that -- contrary to popular belief -- it is LOW stomach acid that causes digestion problems.

I have ordered digestive enzymes with Hcl to supplement in hopes this will help out.

Any further advice or thoughts would be much appreciated. All was well until last week. I'm not sure why it just crept up on me.

I'm not keto, but have had great results using digestive enzymes with hcl. I take them because my gallbladder was removed in 2000.

It could be your gall bladder, funny pebbles mentioned it!

So hit those taters and apples, etc., if it IS gall stones, and dissolve them!

If it's not gall stones, I don't know. I also would have suspected low HCL acid. I drink homebrewed kombucha with every big meal these days to drop my acidity and help things along, and it often liquefies my food. Good stuff.

Yes. I should have mentioned that my (huge, painful, surgery inducing) gall bladder attack occured after a few month on Atkins induction. I was visiting Wisconsin and eating tons of cheese. :P

If I had known then that I could solve the problem without surgery, I would have done so.

Not saying Keto causes gall bladder issues, just that eating high fat will exacerbate the problem if you have one.

What are symptoms of gall bladder issues? Don't they usually involve pain? I have none of that. Just a blocked up feeling behind my sternum... (thank you for your thoughts).

No, there are often no symptoms at all.

I'm pretty sure--just judging by definitions-- that it's a symptom of GERD since the top most common symptom of GERD is:
              "More common symptoms are:

Feeling that food is stuck behind the breastbone"

So, now that that's established, does anyone know if increasing digestive enzymes/hcl will help this? If so, how long does it take? Has anyone had this issue before?

              Many thanks
